Are You Ready For Governor McGraw?

The idea of former Senator Bill Frist becoming governor of Tennessee in 2010 is a distressing thought to Tennessee Democrats, the party at large, and those of us still bitter over the crackdown on Internet gambling. (How am I supposed to place my wasted bets on the U.S. to win the World Cup now?) So, it’s time to bring out the big guns, and even Rep. Harold Ford Jr. cannot match up to the starpower of Mr. Faith Hill… I mean, Tim McGraw.

At first, the idea that McGraw would run for governor in Tennessee seems patently absurd, but then again, America’s obsession with celebrity knows no bounds. Plus, McGraw would be a great candidate—Bill Clinton even said so back in 2006!

I think he’s got it. The Democrats need candidates whom people can relate to in a personal way, people who understand their lives and their concerns and share their values. And I think that’s something Tim can do without even pretending.

I personally wouldn’t be surprised if McGraw was willing to walk away from music either. He has probably one of the most oppressive record deals in recent history and a history of run-ins and general dissatisfaction with the overlords at Curb. The only question is which of his song titles will he appropriate as a slogan? “I Like It, I Love It”? “Not A Moment Too Soon”? “Please Remember Me”? My vote is for “Drugs or Jesus,” but that seems like an unlikely choice.

Tim McGraw for governor of Tennessee? It could work! [LA Times]

If I still lived there, I’d vote for him.

This news does not surprise me at all. McGraw — from Louisiana — and Hill — from Mississippi — were the first country artists to criticize the Bush administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina. And they were extremely public and fierce in their criticism. The Republicans lost these artists at that point. And I think they spoke to how citizens on the ground felt about the administration and the party at that time. And there are lots of people in that region who still have those raw feelings.

    Tim McGraw, FTW!

  3. I’d hit it, um, I mean, vote for it.
