You’ve got a strange way of determining underperformers. Take the two Idol singles–Time of My Life was released in May while Crush made its first appearance on the Hot 100 in mid-August. But of the two, Crush had far better Hot 100 positions, far better airplay and better sales (it’s still pulling in at least 30K per week and just completed its 19th consecutive week in the top 50)–it just came out later. Crush did perform better than Time of My Life, in every single way possible. Then you’ve got Britney’s Womanizer that obviously wasn’t going to chart well in the year-end because it first appeared in the Hot 100 in mid-October, about a month before the chart closes. And of course Beyonce wasn’t going to chart her super-late-in-the-year singles. Der.

@Rock You Like An Iracane: I'm not Chris Molanphy, but my guess: "Decode" came out too late in the year, "Misery Business" was big in '07, and I guess "Crushcrushcrush" overlapped between the two years too much to be that high?

Interesting to see Rihanna and Chris Brown atop the pop charts; would a double or duets album from the sometime paramours would be a huge seller in '09?

Two more songs I forgot to mention -- namely, Atlantic's experimental, pulled-from iTunes singles:

Estelle's "American Boy" wound up at No. 39 for the year, a very respectable showing, all things considered.

And Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" wound up at No. 85, which would be pitiful except that it never had any singles sales points at all; so in a way that's pretty solid, too. On the Country list, "Summer" ranked at No. 42.
