Great Article! I saw the last episode of TRL and was waxing nostalgic about the "good ol' days".

This feels like it could have qualified as one of your heartbreaks, too. Especially those last few sentences.

TRL was certainly waaaaaaaay past its prime. But what is end symbolizes, to me, is very mixed. Good write-up.

@How do I say this ... THROWDINI!: I agree. That's why I miss having a modern rock station in the NYC area (for some reason, market #1 can support up to 5 urban/dance/rhythmic CHR's, but not one alt/active rocker).

As a member of the generation officially ushered out by TRL's grand finale, that opening paragraph is maybe the most concise explanation of MTV I've ever read. Well done, Mike!

What say you about VH1? Is it designed for all generations to come together and hate?

@2ironic4u: With every video easily a click away, why would sit around with a glazed look over your face with the channel tuned to MTV, waiting for it.

For the same reason that I listen to the radio instead of my iPod all the time. Sometimes its nice to just sit back and have different songs/videos picked out for you. And its another way to discover new music. Not that I can't and don't do the same thing by watchin/TiVo'ing VHI, Fuse, etc., but MTV was the first and that's what people will always remember about the beginning of the station.

Well written. I too am always annoyed with the "MTV doesn't play music anymore" argument. It doesn't make sense for them to. With every video easily a click away, why would sit around with a glazed look over your face with the channel tuned to MTV, waiting for it.
