Is Lupe Fiasco Performing In Britface?

The story goes like this: Lupe Fiasco has said he would be retiring after his next album (which is not yet out), but said retirement may only refer to his tenure as a rapper. And now there’s this supposedly British band called Japanese Cartoon (MySpace tagline: “SILENCE IS GOLDEN!!!”) that supposedly has some connection to Lupe, and as a result, people think he is the band’s vocalist, though the official word is that he’s just their producer and “a dear friend.” Well?

It’s hard to tell. It’s unclear why Lupe would deny being the vocalist here, and the band would just be happy for the publicity, so their denial makes sense logically. But, well, it does sound like him, and the “band” sure does sound like it’s sequenced rather than recorded. Also, it’s pretty horrible. So, in conclusion: it’s probably Lupe Fiasco, but you shouldn’t care. Unless you want to hear a cover of a Prodigy song. No, not that Prodigy. Like, “wicked firestartaaaah!” Prodigy. Yeah.

See, I think of this as not bad instead of not good, but that’s partly because I’m hoping Lupe can do the non-hip-hop stuff as a way to recharge his rapping batteries, a la Andre 3000 and Kanye.

Oh, and the bonus track 2dopeboyz had with their post on this was a really, really good one. (Lupe raps.)

Oh no, are we supposed to not like Lupe anymore? Argh… It’s going to be difficult for me, although this will make my transition easier.
That’s a fake British accent If I’ve ever heard one. It sounds like Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow.
