The first batch of bands for this year’s installment of the South By Southwest Music Festival has been announced, which means that we can finally put festival programmer Darin Klein’s claims about just how bands are selected for Austin’s annual Shiner-and-short sets fest to the test. (Aww, the lede of Lucas’ piece mentions free Sparks. How sad.) Among the highlights on the list, which is after the jump: Ida Maria, Ebony Bones, St. Vincent. And Primal Scream, hey!

Earlier: In Case You’re Thinking Of A Last-Minute Application, Here’s How Bands Get Picked For SXSW

Please let Manana and Dananananaykroyd share the same stage.
Well, there sure is a lot of Rock en Espanol, and that’s pretty cool. I have no opinion otherwise.
Unrelated: the SXSW logo sure is ugly this year, isn’t it?
Whoa, the Bar-Kays?
Whoa, Primal Scream?
What I want to know is who will sponsor all the sweet free parties in the new new economy?
The Sonics?!?! THE SONICS?!?!
@Lucas Jensen: seconded.
Two Seattle bands so far!
I’m sure there will be more announced as there’s a lot of good stuff coming out of here right now.
postschadenfreude - Sadly, I think with this economy, the results you may see is less free booze and free food than in the past.
Wtf is The Devil Wears Prada doing at SXSW?
This is rather disappointing, except for Primal Scream.
This, of course, is a huge chunk of the international contingent — so they have 8 whole weeks to secure their visas. Which frankly, in quite a few countries, isn’t enough time. As is the case every year, look for some of the international crowd to be no-shows.
