@Rob Murphy: This is the third comment, because I was really busy today. But that was the exact same reaction I had to DioGuardi's "Umbrella" comment. So much so that I wished fervently it could be a typo for a second.

Oh well. She said on the radio this morning that her contract is only a year.

A -- I can't believe this post drew only one comment today...

Secondly -- that interview from the NYT piece:

"When I was growing up in the business, you could have 'Pieces Of Me,' you could have 'Walk Away,' " she said, noting two of her singles. "Now it's like 'Umbrella,' 'Disturbia' - they're all concept songs that aren't as emotionally connected."

OK. Seriously. This professional expert songwriter -- a new generation's Diane Warren -- can't connect emotionally with "Umbrella"?

SRSLY???

All of my future epinions about her comments will be filtered through the lens of this ridiculously stupid comment.

1. I'll be thrilled if the center holds steady at 2004; it's way better than the '90s. 2. I'm so sick of Cowell bemoaning the lack of personality from last season. There WAS personality, fool, you just squashed it with your ridiculous scripted questions and stiff endorsements.

Can't wait to find out if they've updated the mentors at all. I know they're trying to appeal to the 50-somethings in Middle America, but it would be nice to have maybe a 50-50 split of classic and "current." If a viewer likes a contestant, in theory, the viewer should be able to respond to whatever he/she sings, whether the viewer is familiar with the song or not.
