As someone who really enjoyed the martial arts farce The Foot Fist Way, the news that the film’s masterminds (including the movie’s star, Danny McBride) have a new HBO show called Eastbound And Down was exciting. Finally, the pay-cable comedy series focused on the world of trucking that I’ve waited my entire life for. And clearly the title is a tribute to the late Jerry Reed’s single originating from his co-starring role in Smokey And The Bandit. Unfortunately, in a heartbreaking move, the show has absolutely nothing to do with trucking as far as I can tell; it focuses on something about a baseball player becoming a P.E. teacher. But hey, any excuse to post one of the greatest songs about interstate trucking, I suppose. [New York Observer]

The pilot episode is out there on the internets, and it’s good.
Or, they could be fans of this album

Their use of Lee Hazlewood’s “Pour Man” during the preview clips is reason enough for me to watch (even if I mistook it for “Tried So Hard” by the Flying Burrito Brothers at first). And I think in order to be fully ingratiated into the Apatow workspace you must live & breathe all things Smokey, per the end credits of Anchorman - it’s a sickness?
@disinterested 3rd party: Be sure to check in on Friday. Well, be sure to check in every day, (repeatedly, from multiple computers) but if you want to see some Red Sovine coverage, Friday especially.
@Dan Gibson: “but if you want to see some Red Sovine coverage,” There’s a phrase that’s not getting a lot of use lately. Can’t wait to see your much overdue reappraisal of “colorado cool aid” and “I didn’t jump the fence.”
I dare you to do a tribute to Red Sovine. Many a bourbon soaked night in college was spent listening to that guy. First chore would be to title the genre he created: “Spoken word, country/trucker rap…”
“Come on back and talk to Teddy Baar…”.
