Overheard on last night’s Gossip Girl: One character demanding that another “swear on your Simple Machines 7-inches.” These kids are apparently supposed to be in high school now, mind, yet they’re fetishizing vinyl that I bought in college. Anyway, it’s probably too much of a stretch to think that the Washington setting of this season’s 24 will result in Jack Bauer et al crashing through an Evens gig at Fort Reno during the “7-8 p.m.” episode, right? The writer of that show(or maybe just this episode) has to think he’s one of the coolest dudes ever.
There is nothing less hip, urbane or sensical in this world than Gossip Girl.
Well, I’m totally OK with this comment thread being all about 24 instead.
It’s weird to think about anyone fetishizing Simple Machines vinyl in 2009, particularly because I just tried to sell a copy of Pulley on eBay to no takers.

I have a feeling the music director of Gossip Girl was behind that line. The music is usually pretty good on the show.
I asked the Kings of Leon what they thought about their music being on the show, and they all thought it was a good idea except Caleb.
I’ve never watched an episode of 24 or Gossip Girl, but I’m guessing, based on what I know, that 24 is way better. Then again, I never liked shows like The OC or Dawson’s Creek(the first few seasons of Beverly Hills 90210 will forever rule, though).
In a stunning plot twist, Jack Bauer finally meets his match as he is tasked with trying to fix the PA problems/levels at Fort Reno.
Oh, Fort Reno, i kid because I love.
It’s a shame that the reference will remain completely untouched by whoever actually watches this show…for the dialogue, kind of like that episode of A Minute With Stan Hooper wherein Jesus Christ had a walk-on cameo that nobody else but me seems to remember. But in my heart of hearts, I really hope that maybe, just maybe, Kelly Rutherford owns a copy of A Brilliant Mistake.
I once attended an actual Evens gig at Fort Reno. I don’t remember seeing Taylor Momsen there. She would’ve been about 10 then, though.

i know, right? i feel like that label/era has been bypassed by the 90s nostalgiafest starting to happen.
i too am not a GG watcher, but was/am a rabid Simple Machines fan. a friend advised me of this last night, and instead of thinking, “wow, cool!” it left me more weirded out than anything, and just made me wonder who exactly the show is written for. ’cause it sure as hell ain’t me.
i wouldn’t have thought secret machine 7″ existed, let alone were considered so highly by high schoolers. i must be out of it (much like the writers of the show must be. really? secret machines?).
p.s. – i have an old WB sampler cd from target that features secret machines as one of the eight artists on the compilation. perhaps an old connection or obligation is why they were mentioned instead of some other (more relevant?) band?

Ugh, guess writer/producer Amanda Lasher’s the fan, or possibly even Josh Schwartz or someone else one the writing/production staff — this reeks of writer’s room jokery. Dialogue like this was cute on “The OC,” but as someone pointed out above, it makes me LOATHE the fact that “we” are now writing these things. I don’t find this kind of thing cute or amusing. I find it very annoying and juvenile. I know Gossip Girl isn’t realistic by any stretch of the imagination, but that’s part of the fun — and dialogue like this actually ruins that delightful illusion. Not that I watch it, or anything. No, really. I don’t.
