What Music Are You Looking Forward To In The Coming Months?

I know, I know, I already gave my spiel about how there were lots of records to look forward to in 2009, but the new music I’ve heard since I penned (er, typed?) that piece—as well as the news that the eternally incredible PJ Harvey and John Parish will release a new album at the end of March—got me all excited all over again.

Really, in these days leading up to the inauguration of a new President, isn’t it fun to be optimistic about the future, despite way too many indicators to the contrary? Yes, it is. So here is a safe space for you to announce what albums, singles, tours, music videos, or whatever you’re excited to experience in the coming weeks. Remember, good moods are kind of contagious!

On The CD Front [Pause & Play]

  • Ned Raggett

Oh I'm well with you on the PJ Harvey thing alone. As you know. :-D

Definitely up for the next Depeche Mode album and tour -- David Gahan's turned into a really impressive songwriter and if this new one is the balance between his approach and Martin Gore's that I've been hoping for...

  • moomintroll

    New Gorillaz.

Kwes' first single coming out "Hearts In Home"

Waiting for the US release of "Welcome To Mali" by Amadou and Mariam.

Also super excited to get my Primal Scream tickets tomorrow for their March show at the Metro.

  • brasstax

With both of you on PJ, and with Ned on the DM (I didn't like Gahan's first solo, but loved his second). A continuation of Playing the Angel would suit me just fine.

Albums I'm hoping to see from bands/artists that have no details or release dates yet: Golden Silvers, Ebony Bones, thecocknbullkid, Rox. It looks like I'm going to be a nu-Anglophile this year.

  • MayhemintheHood

I'm looking forward to new releases from Bruce Springsteen, Neko Case, Dan Deacon, Mastodon and Boston Spaceships.

Ben Kweller has a new one coming out...that might be good too.

  • brasstax

@brasstax: Also, anything from my new favorite French band, You!

  • moomintroll

@brasstax: The Cocknbullkid is one I should of put too! Her performance on Later...With Jools Holland was really good. "On My Own" is terrific.

  • Ned Raggett

@brasstax: (I didn't like Gahan's first solo, but loved his second)

I enjoyed the first but agree that the second was a monster -- very underrated album.

  • baconfat

It's still a ways off, but there's a new Yo La Tengo record coming out later this year.

And the new Jay Reatard album, which will hopefully be out even sooner.

  • brasstax

@moomintroll: The next single, "I'm Not Sorry," is unstoppable.

  • sicksteanein

After hearing The Rake's Song, I realized I'll never stop anticipating a Decemberists release.

  • Luke N Atmaguchi

I hope Mary Timony puts something out this year. Anyone seen her new band Pow Wow in D.C.?

  • Anonymous

I'd like for some of that music that Green Gartside (Scritti Politti) and Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip) have been working on to see the light of day. Any new Scritti sounds would be welcome, really. A New LCD album should be good, too. But mostly I'm looking forward to debut LP's from Aeroplane, Tom Trago, Kid Sister and Sisters Of Transistors.

    POW WOW INTERVIEW: [dcist.com]

  • phaballa

JC CHASEZ. If he can bother to release anything.

  • cookiedough

    Avalanches. If if comes out.

  • Kate Richardson

    Mirah (I'm so predictable)

  • brasstax

@cookiedough: I stopped myself from anticipating it two or three years ago...sort of a "watched pot never boils" mentality.

  • kajsa

I really want to hear the Arctic Monkeys/Josh Homme stuff, as well as the new Kasabian, Maximo Park, and Pete Doherty's solo album. As far as tours...Blur at Hyde Park and Glasto is pretty much the only thing I can concentrate on, but I'd like to see Franz Ferdinand and the other four I already mentioned (with the exception of Pete, he'll never be allowed into the US).

  • unperson

The new Franz album is great. Much better than the last one.

  • Al Shipley

There's a lot of stuff coming out in February that I'm looking forward to: Alchemist and Two Tongues and Eleni Mandell and Asobi Seksu and the Lonely Island. Also excited about Ted Leo and Sonic Youth and Mike Watt & The Black Gang coming out with something this year. Plus there's a lot of major label stuff that was supposed to come out in 2008 that I'm still waiting for (Keri Hilson, Jadakiss, Erykah Badu, etc.).

  • Bob Loblaw

OVERCROWDED, HOT AS HELL SUMMER FESTIVALS

    *shivers, gets another blanket*

  • bess marvin, girl detective

Kid Cudi and Girls Aloud (they're like the Duggars of the music world)

  • unperson

I've heard the new Mastodon and Lamb of God albums, and they're both great. I'm also looking forward to the first new Heaven and Hell (that's Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio singing) album since 1992, out in April or May. New Slayer album in July. Lots of good stuff coming this year.

  • D.R. Mosby

Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future by The Bird And The Bee, plus their upcoming show at the Natural History Museum (!) in L.A.

Dark Young Hearts by frYars - if the album is anywhere as good as the Ides and Perfidy EP's, it should be fantastic.

  • SomeSound-MostlyFury

After a short personal music droubt, Andrew Bird, Lily Allen, AC Newman, Decemberists, and M Ward are all out in Jan-Mar. Dammit, I sound like a Stereogummer.

I'm also cautiously optimistic for Franz Ferdinand.

Oh, and hopefully by the end of Feb. people will stop talking about freakin Animal Collective.

  • DocStrange

    @unperson: Oh yes.

"You Could Have It So Much Better" was good, but compared to the first, it was pretty weak.

  • Anonymous

Looking forward to the new Mastodon and I got tickets to the 'last' Ryan Adams show

  • Anonymous

    Mastodon

  • katesilver

The new Marianne Faithfull, hopefully a new Pernice Brothers or the Joe Pernice solo record that's supposed to soundtrack his book, new Teenage Fanclub (spring?), Morrissey, and hopefully a domestic release of Mystery Jets' "Twenty One."

  • DocStrange

Arctic Monkeys, whatever the Fall has out this year (there's always something), Depeche Mode, The Decemberists, Silversun Pickups and The Thermals

And if My Bloody Valentine finally release their third record, that would be nice, too.

I've already heard the new Franz Ferdinand and I really, really like it.

  • Defenestrated

I haven't been keeping a super close eye on upcoming releases, but I am looking forward to new stuff from Asobi Seksu , Neko Case and Dan Deacon. Particularly how Asobi Seksu are doing as a duo now, from the one new song I heard they seem to have completely left behind any shoegazey tendencies.

  • sXenester

The new Thursday is fucking fantastic

  • AL

This incredible Dirty Projectors + David Byrne track [www.mbvmusic.com] has renewed my excitement for the two(!) new DP albums that are supposedly coming out this year.

  • Anonymous

I'm setting aside fifty bucks for the re-issue of Ten by Pearl Jam

  • Anonymous

@Al Shipley: I read an interview with Badu last year where she said she would be coming out with four (!) albums in 2008. If she's got three left in the hopper...well, I can't wait.

Other than that, what I'm really looking forward to is for 2009 to be the year that Hypnotic Brass Ensemble blows up. They are so deserving and I'm really hoping that 2009 is their year.

  • moulty

I'm pretty excited for new Bob Mould and the opportunity to spend an 'intimate' evening with the man and his tunes in March.

  • Anonymous

    A new Grinderman album!!!!

  • westartedthis

i'm loving the new Franz Ferdinand, also looking forward to:

    Jay-Z - Blueprint 3

Bat For Lashes (uh, did you hear Scott Walker is singing on one song???)

    Missy Elliott

    Dan Deacon

    Royksopp

    Detox?

  • raihala

@Ned Raggett: I'm sort of flabbergasted there are people who like Gahan's solo career(!) Maybe I need to go back to that second album and give it another listen.

I am very much looking forward to the new PSB album, out in March. It seems like they're going for a "Very: 2009"-style record this time around.

  • brownham

    grizzly bear

  • Ned Raggett

@raihala: I'm sort of flabbergasted there are people who like Gahan's solo career(!) Maybe I need to go back to that second album and give it another listen.

It surprised even me when I heard how ominous it sounded at its best. I wouldn't say it's on the exact same level as Portishead's Third, say, but it's within shouting distance.

  • cookiedough

    I forgot: Fever Ray.

  • Lucas Jensen

I heard of this band called Venice is Sinking. Heh.

  • doublewhiskycokenoice

i'm hoping for a new pig destroyer album. also, i have a sneaking suspicion that the new lions on the street record will put them into my pantheon of favorite bands.

  • Oldboy

Amadou & Mariam, and the Decemberists!

  • DocStrange

@Oldboy: I like the song the Decemberists have released on their website. They are possibly the only band that can make an upbeat song about filicide work.

  • Anonymous

pushed back from 08 r&b albums: keri hilson, ciara, ryan leslie and the-dream. also non-pushed back joint from electrik red, whole album written/produced by dream and tricky

  • Anonymous

    Trail of Dead

    M. Ward

    Pearl Jam

    Neko Case

And hopefully RHCP will stay broken up.

  • Anonymous

    The new Guns And Roses.

  • cassidy2099

Kid Sister, Jay-Z, MSTRKRFT(even though they disappointed me with their live show)and of course Queens of the Stone Age. We're due for that.

  • Anonymous

...looking forward to that quiet little band ..rammstein

  • Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee

@cassidy2099: I've actually heard that QotSA will be re-releasing their first self-titled album this year, with a tour to follow.

Word is that they'll use the tour to play said album in its entirety at every show.

Keep in mind, this is all secondhand information... It could be B.S...

  • Anonymous

I just feel the need to mention that when I first saw that picture at the top of this article, I thought it was Nigel Tufnel.

  • tigerpop

A new Parish-PJ record is all I need, really. Dance Hall at Louse Point was soooo good, and soooo long ago. It'll be this year's Third if it stands up.

Also, the second New Amerykah disc should be sick.

  • NervousBreakdance

    Archie Bronson Outfit. Zola.

  • Anonymous

Looking forward to the new Cure after their last one pleasantly surprised me.

Also, it's about time Boards Of Canada put something new out, isn't it?

Apparently I'm only into bands that have jumped the shark. Hunh.

  • Oldboy

@DocStrange: Yes, and the only band that could get all bouncy about Valerie Plame. Wonder if she's heard the tune?

  • the rich girls are weeping

I was about to say something snarky about how I'm looking forward to anything good that I haven't ever heard before that hasn't been mentioned here.

Of course, what I really mean is that I'm happy that there's new stuff from Depeche Mode, Morrissey, Antony, Neko Case, Decemberists, Ted Leo, PJ Harvey, Grinderman (is that true?), Dirty Projectors, etc. on tap.

But what I'd really love to hear is something new and exciting out of left field that will give me faith that all new bands coming up aren't crap.

I am NOT looking forward to the continued needless hype over Titus Andronicus. Ugh.
