Peabo Bryson And Regina Belle Could Never Have Expected This

My favorite musical moment from the Saturday Night Live that aired 36-ish hours ago: A re-imagining of the 1992 chart-topper “A Whole New World” in which Aladdin and Jasmine, married 10 years, sing about how the thrill in their love life has gone away thanks to time, age, and the damn Genie wayyyy overstaying his welcome. Clip after the jump.

Hey, so Rosario Dawson’s singing voice is not bad! Also, how many of you also thought this week’s Digital Short was basically Andy Samberg throwing up his hands and saying, “Sorry everyone, but I’m really uninspired this week, but at least I threw in some weirdly bro-ish homoeroticism to keep the base happy!”?

I mean, it was still better than most of the episode, but a video of me talking in my sleep probably would be, too.

    I dunno what it is about “A Whole New World,” but it seems ripe for parody: back when it was a hit, my sister and I composed our own parody entitled “The Same Old Shit.”

    (”The same old shit/The stuff I’ve done a thousand times/I’ll do it all again/There’ll be no end/And when I’m done, there’ll be more shit to do.”)

    Oh, and: word on the Samberg clip, and on the whole episode. What a drag. Actually, the only video I did enjoy was the fake ad for the bank that rejects everybody — not ha-ha funny but incisive/satirical.

    @Chris Molanphy: i liked the gitmo clearance sale bit, too.

    @Maura Johnston:

    I thought the only part of the episode that was funny was that Gitmo bit. Everything else was really, really unfunny and borderline unwatchable.

    The dig at Vassar was quite amusing.

    Oh no, that means that “Whole New World” could get huge at karaoke. As it is, I get people singing that every week.

    the gitmo bit was funny, this whole new version is priceless but the gitmo part has a HUGE error. There’s a very noticable Puerto Rican flag in the background. The colors of the Cuban flag are the reverse of the Puerto Rican flag but still…they’re two different countries and flags.

    Fleet Foxes bored me to tears.

    @Invisible Circus: Meh. I liked Fleet Foxes as a sort of wintry, slow-paced symphony, and I found myself really digging their voices. This was also probably partly because I just flipped it on to whatever their first song was and watched Weekend Update, so I missed most of the (crappy) episode.

    @Rock You Like An Iracane: weekend update suffers a bit for me; I’m going through Amy withdrawls…
