Lil Wayne Shreds

ARTIST: Lil Wayne TITLE: “Prom Queen” WEB DEBUT: Jan. 25, 2009

ONE-LISTEN VERDICT: The leadoff single from Lil Wayne’s forthcoming “rock” album brings together the worst tendencies of your rock and roll stations out there and the most AutoTuned tics of the radio dial’s pop stations. Which is why it’s probably appropriate that the lyrics spin a straighter-than-straightforward revenge on the hot girl from high school who ignored Weezy back in the day story, complete with the old “askin’ herself where she went wrong” subplot.

Actually, come to think of it, if you think of this track as a sort of conceptual sequel to “Sk8er Boi”—where the dude who was told “See ya later” back in the day finally gets to tell his side of the story, complete with lingerie descriptions that Avril was too polite to get into—it makes even more sense. Well, OK, so that little bit of line-drawing still doesn’t make “Prom Queen” sound any better, but it at least places it somewhere in this millennium’s rock and pop universe.

WHERE TO HEAR IT: The game of YouTube whack-a-mole is no doubt raging as we all sit and scratch our heads, but you can hear it here for now:
