The Cocknbullkid is the stage name for Anita Blay, a Londoner who writes and produces her and who proclaims on her MySpace page that “the Sugababes were never the same when Mutya left.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, she has quite the ear for a well-crafted pop tune; her latest single, “I’m Not Sorry,” is a storming track right out of the gate, one that uses the trick of matching high-pitched, icy synths with high-pitched, chilly vocals for an Arctic blast of repressed emotion to great effect. I don’t know if she’s still working in tandem with the Metronomy dudes, because this has a much less obscured pop approach. Either way, bring on the LP.
I can’t wait for the album, she was excellent on Later (Jools) a few months ago. “On My Own” is my favorite so far.
Not ashamed to say that this is one of the best things I’ve heard in ages.
