I know, I know—some of the greatest acts in music perform at Coachella, including Morrissey, Madonna, Jay-Z, and Paul McCartney, but I never thought it was worth it to pay $300+ dollars to sit through a number of bands I didn’t care for just ...

Interesting how Billy Talent is in there. They…really don’t fit but good for the festival organizers for changing it up just the slightest.

  2. A Roach  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Interesting– a really solid lineup, but nothing that blows me away.

Cure and Killers are fairly weak headliners– particularly compared to the rumors of the last week, when when the delay meant people had nothing else to do but speculate (Pavement, Bowie as Ziggy etc).

But there are a lot of solid sub-headliners: Cohen, MBV, Morrissey.

    Wonder how much McCartney cost…

  3. TheRunningboard7  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Blitzen Trapper… if I wanted to see Tom Petty, I’d see Tom Petty. No matter, doubting I’d make the trek.

I think I’d be most excited for Los Campesinos!, but only because I’ve just recently discovered them. I’m thinking that is a shame.

Overall though I like the look of it.

  4. moomintroll  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

huh, no Blur. I guess my trip is off since I just got Morrissey tickets and I saw MBV last September.
Oh well, It’s probably for the best.

  5. KurticusMaximus  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Yeah, definitely seems like a bunch of thoroughly solid undercards, with three fairly meh headliners. Which is kind of disappointing, since I was hoping for an excuse to take an absurdly impractical trip to CA this year. Alas!

    That said, fuck yeah Aggrolites.

  6. Dan Gibson  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    Superchunk! Superchunk! Superchunk!

(I know they’ve played your McCarren Pool and whatnot in recent years, but they haven’t been anywhere near me in a decade or so.)

  7. Butch Huskey  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

just a guess but i’d bet another big name is added as a Sat. headliner or co-headliner because while Amy Winehouse/Killers/TV On The Radio is a solid lineup none of them are exactly giant “gets” …

  8. Audif Jackson Winters III  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

It’s interesting how the number of electronic acts and billed DJs has dwindled since the begining of the decade.

  9. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@A Roach: If this is the Killers only So-Cal show, that’s a pretty big “get” considering the tour they are currently on has been selling out arenas pretty swiftly.

  10. Al Shipley  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

It always amazes me how these festivals that I ostensibly am right in the target demographic for can book something like 50 bands, out of which there are maybe 3 that I’ve ever owned albums by.

@Dan Gibson: Yeah, Superchunk is definitely the only band I’d be remotely excited to see. Hopefully this isn’t a one-off and gives me hope for at least a string of east coast dates this year.

  11. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Throbbing Gristle….now that should separate the adults from the children!

  12. mexiback  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Very “meh” for my personal taste, love my Sebastien Tellier and my Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but nothing else brings the screaming music fan-gotta-go-see-them in me. :(

  13. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

I’m curious to see if the crowd is into the Clipse.

I’d love to go but I can’t justify the cost

  14. Ned Raggett  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@2ironic4u: the tour they are currently on has been selling out arenas pretty swiftly

Good god, don’t depress me like that.

Anyway, never thought I’d be missing an MBV show in SoCal but there you go; that said I’ll be up in Seattle for the EMP Pop Conference so it was all out of my hands anyway! (I’m sure I’ll get all sorts of twitters about the set.)

  15. kicking222  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Fuck me in the ass, the NYC area needs some big-ass festivals. We’ve got our Sirens and whatnot, but damnit, I want YYY, Ting Tings, Ida, Killers, MSTRKRFT, PE, Hold Steady, Henry Rollins, etc. etc. etc. on one bill! That’s just goddamn ridiculous.

Also, Shephard Fairey is on the bill… does he do music, too?

  16. doublewhiskycokenoice  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    GET WHELMED.

  17. Rory B. Bellows  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

So has Paul McCartney now come full circle where he has hipster cred for being underestimated as a solo artist?

How long until the rumors start that Ringo is playing drums, making it a reunion of the living Beatles. I hear they are playing Sgt. Peppers in its entirety.

  18. catdirt  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

But what do Stereogum commenters think about the line up?

  19. Nicolars  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    @catdirt: They think?

  20. Ted Striker  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    @TheRunningboard7:

Saw Los Campesinos! last night, actually. Their live show is great at capturing the delightful anarchy on their records. Go see ‘em!

  21. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@kicking222: NYC-area festivals have proven, time and time again, that it for whatever reason does not work here. Case in point: Across The Narrows, Field Day, All Points West (only one day sold out).

  22. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@Ned Raggett: Yes, The Killers are pretty much second to Coldplay in that act that young professionals, teens, people who might kind of consider themselves indie compared to the yuppie friends, etc. listen to AND will go see live.

  23. TheRunningboard7  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@Ted Striker: !!! Feb 3 in Lawrence!! (and with Titus Andronicus.. not too shabby). I’ll make the .5 hr. drive.

  24. Nunya B  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

I want to type this in all caps: Do you think there is any chance that Antony will show up and sing with H&LA?

  25. Christopher R. Weingarten  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Throbbing Gristle on the bill is a stroke of genius or whimsy or both.

  26. Ned Raggett  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@2ironic4u: I will think of this knowledge in the sense of ‘well if it keeps them busy and away from me’ (as one might think of child care if one is a harried parent — perhaps).

  27. NoWireHangers  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    Paul McCartney = Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  28. chaircrusher  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

I don’t know, I think the Cure are pretty great headliners. No one talks about it much but there are few bands that put on a live show like the Cure. They’re kind of like the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band, only for the smeared mascara set.

  29. mackro  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

the Sunday lineup wins in a landslide.

  30. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

You know what would be better than Mike Patton & Rahzel? Patton Oswalt & Rahzel.

  31. Ned Raggett  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@chaircrusher: I agree but at the same time Cure festival sets aren’t standalone Cure live sets — with the former they tend to focus on a fairly standard selection of the hits/classics with a small handful of newer or obscure songs, whereas the latter is when you can get the 2 1/2 or 3 hour “let’s see how long we can make THIS version of ‘A Forest’” deals.

  32. cheesebubble  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

you poor, misguided naysayers. I WANT TO GO!

  33. el smrtmnky  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@Nunya B: omg. that would be amazing. dizzee rascal did it when basement jaxx played several years ago. (and no b jaxx this year. sad face)

    @Maura Johnston: wait for it.

  34. Chris Barrus  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

I’d love to see the expression on the sound guy’s face when reading the audio specs for MBV and TG.

  35. Ned Raggett  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@Chris Barrus: At the end of all that there probably won’t be a face. Or even a head.

  36. janine  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    @Rory B. Bellows: It’s the Colbert Bump(TM).

  37. Swankster  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Are peeps really bitching about McCartney? Really? He’s a Beatle! And his ’solo’ shows are basically a Beatles retrospective fronted by Sir Paul with the best cover band money can buy.

  38. X, Fucked Up, Gaslight Anthem, The Night Marchers (ex-RFTC), Paul Weller, not to mention the Cure, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Throbbing Gristle…

Sunday is for the punx, yo.

  39. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

Wonder if Macca’s going to drag Dave Grohl out for a song or two. Probably not, I’m guessing.

  40. SteveLepore  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

You know, I feel like they’re gonna announce another big headliner for Saturday close to the show.

Hey what do you know, guys? Bruce has 6 days off after his LA show, and they’re smack dab the weekend of Coachella! What a coincidence!

  41. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    1. Friday is definitely old dude day.

    2. Wagers starting now on whether Winehouse actually shows up…

    3. Is Zizek the name of a band, or does that mean philosophy/lit crit rock star Slavoj Zizek will be on hand giving a lecture?

    4. What’s up with how low down on their respective lists some bands show up – the Hold Steady, Liars, Okkervil River? Are groups like the Tings Tings, Glasvegas, and Groove Armada really more popular?

  42. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    no britney u_u

  43. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

@Maura Johnston: Amy Winehouse is kind of hipster Britney.

  44. T'Challa  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

    @Nunya B: I’m freaking banking on it!

  45. T'Challa  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

  46. T'Challa  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2009

They had me at LEONARD (flippin’) COHEN!!! Um, HELLO?!?

OK, sorry. I’m just excited. Add Superchunk, Throbbing Gristle(!!!) and the thought that McCartney might just decide to kill everybody by pulling out the best of Wings has me getting the tires checked and booking a hotel for Indio. It’s on in the desert, yo!

I’ve heard of him doing DJ sets at art openings. That could be what he’s doing, I guess

  49. amyk  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2009

T’Challa – McCartney, Cohen and Superchunk are 3 of my all time favorites EVER. I’m with you.

Did anyone read the Cohen Glastonbury reviews? Now how exactly am I going to get there from Chicago??

    Paul McCartney – YEEEEESSSSS!!!!
