We’re about three hours away from the televised portion of the 51st annual Grammy Awards, during which a mere 10 award presentations will be smushed in between three and a half hours’ worth of performances by the likes of U2, Lil Wayne, and Coldplay, as well as a few gratuitous will.i.am tie-ins. So what about those other 110 trophies for apparently non-telegenic categories like Best Packaging, Best Regional Mexican Album, and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical? They’re being given out right now at a preshow that’s being streamed from the awards’ official site and live-blogged by the Grammys’ hyperactive Twitter feed. And yes, Justice did win the Best Remixed Recording trophy for their reworking of MGMT’s “Electric Feel,” which should serve as some sort of validation for the elbo.ws crowd. [HT: Pop & Hiss]

No Age lost to Metallica in the Best Packaging award. Really. Metallica. Add the fact Hot Chip just lost Best Dance Recording to Daft Punk, i’m not -2 in Grammy Predictions
In other pretty good news, George Carlin won Best Comedy Album. (-1 in Grammy predictions), Daft Punk won Best Dance Album (0 in Grammy prediction)
Now all i’m waiting for is Best Rock Instrumental Performance unless I haven’t paid enough attention and I missed it.
@DocStrange: daft punk swept for a live album??
Best Electronic/Dance Album: Alive 2007, Daft Punk
I was really hoping Cyndi or Robyn’d take this one, or even at a pinch Kylie- anything but Alive 2007. SRSLY?
@Maura Johnston: Alive 2007 – Which was a good album. But yeah, two awards tonight for the French robots.
(also, the death magnetic packaging is actually pretty cool.)
Wow. There’s alot more Classical awards than i’d ever thought.
Best Classical Contemporary Composition: Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems Of Bob Dylan John Corigliano (JoAnn Falletta)
Best Classical Vocal Performance: Corigliano: Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems Of Bob Dylan Hila Plitmann
i just want to say that the laziest award nominees are KILLING IT today:
[idolator.com]
@Maura Johnston: And they continue to. Weezer just beat out “House of Cards” for Best Short Form Music Video (so i’m back to -1 in Grammy Predictions).
@DocStrange: Wow. WOW.
Well, ICanHazCheezburger.com, look for your $450k check in the mail soon!
Best Hawaiian Music Album? There’s actually such a thing?
Um, wow. I kinda didn’t expect cash4gold.com to be better designed than grammy.com.
I can’t help but think that ten years from now, the main Grammy show is going to look like pre-show does today. And the pre-show’s going to be held in a Burger King.
Okay, now they’re giving out what you’d expect to be major awards out at the preshow – namely Best Female Pop Vocal (it went to Adele). So is it going to be 2 1/2 hours and 6 awards?
@Dickdogfood: Burger King might be pushing it. I’m thinking of something along the lines of an alley behind a pawn shop.
Oh. In Rainbows won Best Alternative album. What a shock. Absolutely none of us saw that coming.
@DocStrange: 1. I’m being sarcastic and 2. they completely deserved it.
The More You Know.
@DocStrange: This is what I don’t understand- the rock awards, and something like best female pop vocal should be BIG awards. I’d rather see them on the big telecast than suffer through gratuitous will.i.am.
Whoo- Mars Volta just won something!
Oh god, it’s even more pathetic when you see how few people showed up.
holy crap i’m 5 out of 6 on the Rock Awards. (the one I didn’t get was Best Rock Instrumental, which just went to Zappa Plays Zappa – a (pretty good) Frank Zappa cover band led by Dweezil Zappa – for their performance of “Peaches en Regalia”. I had David Gilmour to win.)
I think low turn-out for the pre-show is pretty normal, but it still feels like The Way Things Are Now.
Aw, damn. No Stephin Merritt shout-out, Maura.
Well, at least I can enjoy Radiohead playing “15 Step” with a marching band. That should be a hoot.
@DocStrange: The Springsteen win was the one I was least surprised about. Magic got no love, so he was bound to take this. Plus he’s won for Best Rock Song two other times. Mulligan.
dammit. I’m 5 for 7 now on the Rock Awards. Damn you Springsteen.
Hi, DHMBIB reporting for pre-show duty…
I just got my half-assed last minute predix up, and I see I’ve already missed some (and won some…)
I think Maura’s right — tonite will have a strong “hey, i’ve heard of that band/artist/song, so i’ll vote for that” feel to it…
Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical: Rick Rubin
@Rob Murphy: Pepsi will not be back as a sponsor next year…
Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical: “Consolers Of The Lonely”
Did NARAS members actually listen to that record???
@DocStrange: And TIA CARRERE won it??? “Grammy winner Tia Carrere”?
E! is saying Chris Brown is “under investigation” for assaulting a woman last night. Neither he nor Rhianna coming tonight.
Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package: “In Rainbows”
is that some meta-commentary on “packaging as MP3 download” or something? also, PATD are pretty. pissed. about this…
@The Van Buren Boys: wait, what? Rihanna is supposed to be a key part of 2nite’s performances, no?
Lil Wayne and Ne-Yo are big winners in the pre-show…
They said Justin Timberlake might be filling in. It seems like a last minute thing. Apparently the incident happened after Clive Davis’s shindig last night.
@Thierry: And a random member of the Ho family.
Sounds like both of them went through a boxing match and they KO’d each other
Hey everyone, the liveblog’s over here:
[idolator.com]
chris brown investigated for assaulting rihanna. according to this commenter (Number #20), her friend is the wife of a LAPD cop. rihanna called the cops. apparently, it wasn’t the first time. let’s say it all together, OH SNAP.
[justjared.buzznet.com]
Lazy predix:
1) Coldplay getting big-upped on 60 Minutes tonite = big Grammy nite for Coldplay?…
2) saw Rihanna not appearing 2nite…i’ll bite my tongue for now…
3) from USAT: “It all stems from a keystone number, Swagga Like Us, that brings together the ultimate hip-hop summit of Kanye West, Jay-Z, T.I. and Lil Wayne,” Ehrlich says. “We use that as an anchor and amplify it so each artist has a major presence elsewhere in the show.”
…so, “Paper Planes” wins ROTY?
discuss…
Wow! That was an nice episode!
