Sorry, Mexico. I Still Love Your Music

While most of the world relaxes after the Super Bowl and Maura sits on the edge of her office chair waiting for pitchers and catchers to report on Saturday, tonight is the pinnacle of my sports-related 2009: It’s the World Cup Qualifier between the United States and Mexico in Columbus, Ohio. As a devoted fan of my country’s soccer team (despite my occasional reservations regarding the United States itself), I’m probably going to talk some trash about the country of Mexico and (specifically) its national soccer team tonight, so I figured I’d offer up a pre-emptive apology. Five excellent songs by Mexican artists below the cut.

The music of Los Tigres Del Norte is somewhat impossible for me to avoid here in Tucson, since the radio station that plays norteño seems to be the official background music of where I buy my burritos. It’s impossible for me to keep up with the band’s releases, but the subject matter of drug trafficking, illegal immigration, and betrayal works for me in one- or two-song doses. I have no idea what’s going on with this video, and I think it might be a fan creation, but it’s kind of awesome.

Los Tigres Del Norte, “La Caminoeta Gris”:

I have no context for some of the newer acts coming from Mexico these days, but thankfully, MTV Tres occasionally introduces me to something new.

Zoe, “Reptilectric”:

Porter, “Host Of A Ghost”:

Los Dynamite, “T.V.”

Kinky is one of those bands I’m generally on the fence about. Their albums aren’t great, but their live show is really entertaining. They’re coming to Tucson later this month, so why not include them as well?

Kinky, “Sister Twisted”:

Sorry to be spiteful, Mexico. I love your culture; I just am not a big fan of your soccer team. I hope we’re still cool.

OMG Maura, do you live in Tucson? I live in Nogales, OMGOMGOMG. Regarding the “Camioneta Gris” video, it’s not a fanmade, it’s an actual movie that was done around the song which was an incredible hit in the 80’s. The guy on the copter is Mario Almada, the biggest B-movie star in Mexico at the time.

Yo should check out, if you haven’t yet, some music from Julieta Venegas, Chetes, Plastilina Mosh and Cafe Tacvba, also Marco Antonio Solís, if you want real emotion in a voice, forget about Chris Martin or something, Marco Antonio “El Buki” is the one to go to.

And about the game, the mexican teams has been sucking ass FOR YEARS now, so I kinda want them to lose, maybe that way they can sack up, gosh.

@Maura Johnston: Oops sorry! for future reference, just change the name Maura for Dan. Ok I’ll do it:

For the spanish challenged, the lyrics of Camioneta Gris almost match every scene in that video.

@mexiback: Also adding to your list
    Nortec Collective
    Ely Guerra
    El Gran Silencio
    Natalia LaFourcade
    IMS/MIS
    Molotov

Reconquista!: The Latin Rock Invasion is pretty essential and about half Mexican bands. But if you haven’t heard Café Tacvba do yourself a favor and do that immediately.

@La Mareada: Uuu, loves me some Natalia Lafourcade…

@La Mareada: I’ll second El Gran Silencio, and add in Maná, specifically ¡Ay, Doctór!

For some reason, my Mexican friend can’t stand them, but I can’t get enough of this song.

@ds: Maná are huge everywhere in the world, but in Mexico, though still very popular, suffered from the biggest case of backlash (Manálash?) in te history of our country. It has kinda to do with the fact that they seem to be making the same album since 1991 or something.
