Dept. Of Potentially Sacrilegious Stunts

Speculation surrounding the Pet Shop Boys‘ performance at this Wednesday’s Brit Awards contained this upsetting nugget: “Lady Ga Ga… may or may not be hauled on stage to perform What Have I Done To Deserve This?, which was originally sung by Dusty Springfield. The Outstanding Contribution To Music Award winners scored a collaborative hit with it in 1987.” [Music Radar]

It’s more like “What Have WE Done to Deserve This?”

    Just…no.

Still better than having Duffy do it.

    Always the silver lining, Paul.

@brasstax: Seriously?! There we part ways.

Even if I agree that Duffy is no Dusty (so sick of that facile rockcrit meme).

I don’t hate Duffy’s album, fwiw. But everytime I’ve seen her perform live on some late night show or what have you, she has absolutely no control over her own voice. She tries all this improv and it NEVER sounds good.

This hurts me in the heart. For reals.

Give me a thousand Duffys over one GaGa. I prefer her vocal tics to GaGa’s faux-brassy tonelessness in every way.

I’m so upset, I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep tonight.

@Chris Molanphy: Fo real, I am no particular Duffy fan, but any crit that involves saying ” ‘whatever 2-3 year old act’ is no ‘time-tested act from decades ago’” is pretty lazy and stupid.

@DJorn: Well, so was Dusty… The woman wrote lyrics on her arms because she couldn’t remember them, for God’s sake.

Ugh, couldn’t they get Beth Ditto instead? Even drug addled Winehouse would be an improvement over GagGag or Duff.

@brasstax: Yeah, agreed big-time. I’m not that into her album, but I think “Mercy” was easily one of last year’s best singles (and a killer video to boot with all those old-school Northern Soul moves). I was so excited to see her on SNL, hyped the song up for my wife, then practically had to apologise to her after the performance. Duffy sounded flat-out awful, and through no fault of the show’s sound staff. She didn’t even look comfortable on stage. Lousy performer in every way.

That sucks, this is still my favorite PSB track.

I’d hold off reservations until I see it.. I like PSB and I like Lady GaGa, not so sure if those 2 things make a right.
