The Yeah Yeah Yeahs Learn Their Letters And Numbers

ARTIST: Yeah Yeah Yeahs
TITLE: “Zero”
WEB DEBUT: Feb. 16, 2009

ONE-LISTEN VERDICT: The first single off It’s Blitz!, the third album from the art-pop trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs, starts off with Karen O singing over a simple bed of a grinding guitar and a thumping beat before opening up and allowing some synths that sound like they were inspired by a late-night listening session to ABC’s “When Smokey Sings” to scamper in underneath Karen’s caterwauling. (NB: This is not a bad thing.) “Zero” could be the YYYs’ attempt at writing a prom theme for the disaffected—”you’re a zero, what’s your name, no one’s gonna ask you, better find out where they want you to go,” proclaims the chorus—and even if the homage wasn’t intentional, the song does hit that mark expertly.

Oh my god this takes me to John Hughes movies from the 80s. I think its pretty good.

I definitely second the 80’s feel, like some sort of less-populist John Hughes prom scene; this is of course a good thing.

The YYYs without Brian Chase are nothing special. By extension, this song is nothing special.

Didn’t they already do that with “Our Time”? That said, this song is kinda awesome! Looking forward to this record a bit more now.
