Because NBC is too cheap to pay royalties to music publishers, the Roots have to write some 200 songs for their stint as the house band on Jimmy Fallon’s upcoming late-night talk show; they’ve written 55 so far. At least the idea-strapped network isn’t so stingy as to not give the guys time off—the band will be allowed to tour 10 weeks a year, provided Fallon’s show lasts that long, of course. [RS]

I’m torn. I love trying to figure out how a particular song relates to a guest. On the other hand, who wouldn’t want 200 new songs by the Roots?

@How do I say this … THROWDINI!: I would love to get a record of 100 30 second snippets from the Roots. I think it could be great.

@Lucas Jensen: Me too. Do they still number their songs consecutively? If so, the cd would be numbered what, songs 175-275? Sweet.

@How do I say this … THROWDINI!: If I ever interview ?uestlove, I want to ask him if he numbers them consecutively during recording or after the album is chosen. (It’s obviously the latter, but I’d love to see what he says.)

Meh… More like 200 10-second song clips. they can handle it.

Sounds great, 200 new roots joints… Too bad Fallon will get crushed by Fergason in the ratings.

This is pretty ridiculous given that A) pretty much every other house band in late night gets to play popular songs constantly, including the Max Weinberg 7 and B) a huge part of why the Roots as a house band were a good idea in the first place is that they’re really good at working up live covers of popular/classic rap tunes.

I think that the whole not-paying-royalties thing tells you how much faith NBC has that Fallon will succeed…
