Brent DiCrescenzo at Time Out Chicago has heard whisperings that the Windy City indie stalwart Touch & Go will stop releasing new records and only exist as a catalog label, so as to keep albums by the likes of Slint and Big Black in print. Label president Corey Rusk wouldn’t comment, but said that a statement was forthcoming later today. (UPDATE: The statement is here; T&G is continuing on as a label, but ceasing its distribution operations.) Touch & Go celebrated its 25th anniversary about a year and a half ago, and just released a pair of albums—by Mi Ami and Sholi—this week. Ugh. [Time Out Chicago; HT Christopher R.W.]

Metalheads should check out the DEAD CHILD album they released last year. Don’t let the inclusion of David Pajo of Slint, Papa M, and Zwan on guitar fool you. They aren’t hipster metal by any stretch.

Competing stories out there. Kot (Tribune) and DeRo (SunTimes) are going with a shutdown of P&D for other labels (both quoting a memo from Corey Rusk). The Spork says that the only thing left will be catalog sales — no new releases or P&D.
