The Brit Awards Will Make You Care About Duffy One Way Or The Other

Welsh Lulu-in-training Duffy was the big winner at the Brit Awards, scooping up trophies for British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, and British Album (where Rockferry beat out the Coldplay album and Radiohead’s In Rainbows). (Never let it be said that the term “UKraziness” was not an apt one when it came to the country’s relationship with popular music.) Full list of winners after the jump!

I read one review that said GaGa was “channeling Tina Turner.” Oh dear.

Also Brandon Flowers chimed in on “It’s A Sin.”

This can tide us all over:

@Maura Johnston: Also Brandon Flowers chimed in on “It’s A Sin.”

That alone = better than anything else he’s done over the past year.

@Maura Johnston: Wow, that was awesome! Pop entrance of the year thus far for sure.

I’m not sure why conventional wisdom pegs “The Promise” as a weak GA single — it kinda wipes the floor with everything on TANGLED UP for me at least, and that includes the bafflingly canonized “Call The Shots,” which I’ve always found to be just pretty good.

Duffy’s record is very good—very musical. Maybe not better than Radiohead in the grand scheme of things, but certainly better than Coldplay. Paul Weller’s appeal is best understood by his countrymen–it’s lost on me….

Whoo hooo! Elbow, Girls Aloud and Florence & the Machine. For all the crap they still gave some love to good stuff.

Yeah I don’t get Paul Weller either. I’ll give you some of The Jam stuff and a couple of songs by the Style Council, but his solo stuff puts me to sleep.
I also don’t get the UK’s love affair with Kings Of Leon. Damn they are boring. And the singer is a cocky douche.
