Above, the medley of the Pet Shop Boys‘ greatest hits that closed out the BRIT Awards an hour ago, which features some pretty great special effects involving video of an escalator and a ton of their biggest tracks. Awesome, just awesome. Please let this result in them supplementing their two UK shows in June with at least one Stateside appearance! Or at least a simulcast of one of those shows online, maybe. I didn’t want to spoil the goodwill in the post itself, but man is Lady GaGa terrible.
I’ll tell you one thing, the PSB performance at the Arizona State Fair a few years ago was sublime.
@Maura Johnston: Oh, I’ll bite. What did we…what did we…what did we do to deserve her?
That was like a nonstop parade of awesome. God, what a career. I love that Britain makes a body of work like that possible.
I didn’t even mind Lady GaGa that much. (She was brief.) And Flowers kind of rocked “It’s a Sin.”
@Chris Molanphy: He did!
That was pretty great. And I’m warming up, ever so slightly, to the new single.
I don’t understand, however, why anyone thought Brandon Flowers and Lady GaGa were necessary (beyond the obvious pair up young people with old pop stars thing).
Plus, does Lady GaGa know she looks like that? Seriously. Does she look in the mirror before she goes onstage and say “Yeah!”
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW
Also, if Lady GaGa did not exist, the Pet Shop Boys would have had to invent her. Lord knows they’ve tried enough times.
I’d give Lady Gaga a great big FAIL for What Have I Done, but her and Brandon’s voices worked surprisingly well on West End Girls. I would be interested in seeing them work something out together. Plus maybe she would drive him to finally sleep with boys a little.
@dyfl: Well put! I guess she’s their fault.
@Halfcatfacelose: IAWTC re: “West End Girls.”
Classic, and I haven’t really paid attention since Very, but when did Tennant radically change his live singing voice? I don’t remember him this nasal and stylized…
Did he catch a dose of the Dave Gahans, who switches his studio style for something that could kindly be described as “emotive and transatlantic” on stage these days (“AAAAhhhm takin’ a raaaahd with ma best frienddd”)
@Bong14: Off-topic, but I’m really sad that Dave Gahan sings like that nowadays. (Does that mean I won’t spend >$50 to see them when they tour the US? Fuck no.)
@raihala: Oh, she knows what she looks like, and she’s quite pleased with herself. It’s art, dontcha know?
@Chris Molanphy: I know! Flowers didn’t totally eat it. I think he’s getting better live.
All in all, despite the brief GaGa appearance, a very cool little performance. I’m glad they didn’t muck it up with too many guest appearances.
@Halfcatfacelose: Well, if anyone could do it, she’d be a good bet. At least then she’d be useful!
“Love etc.” really stands with the best of their back catalogue, I gotta say.
Brandon Flowers did a good job. [Note that I am carefully omitting something. Guess what it is?]
Well, that awesome.
I still don’t understand why anyone would wear bedazzled granny panties in public, though.
loved this – wow flowers actually sounded good even if he looked a bit nervous and out of place up there – mormon boy’s first trip to the gay bar a la psb
Jesus…Lady GaGa is straight out of Deep House Dish.
Do not blame Gaga on PSBs: she’s someone’s bizarre amalgamation of Dale Bozzio and Taylor Dayne. (even though somehow Santi White proved their is a good Bozzio influence.)
This performance was great and the award so well deserved.
@Weezy F Baby: YES!
