Kim Ki O (Turkish for “Who is that anyway,” it seems) is a female bass and synth duo from Istanbul influenced by riot grrrl, the Human League, and Stephin Merritt—and they’ve supported Jens Lekman on tour. To be honest, that’s all I needed to be prodded into downloading their two free self-released albums from their Web site, but doing so turned out to be a wise impulse. Some of the tracks are a bit Neu!-ish, while some of the others are more reminiscent of Stereolab, but regardless, it’s always nice to have an obscure act from a foreign country to drop in a music snob showdown.
