Would You Pay To See Michael Jackson Perform Live?

Sky News is reporting that Michael Jackson—who turned 50 last August—is set to play a series of comeback concerts at London’s O2 Arena this summer, and that if demand is high enough the run could be as long as Prince’s 21-show stint at the arena in 2006. It could be a good way to make some money for the King Of Pop, whose last major live appearance occurred when he sang a few off-key bars of “We Are The World” at the World Music Awards two-ish years ago. But since then, his appearances have revealed him to be frail (and pajama-clad), and he’s been rumored to be on the verge of death. Will Jackson be able to recapture the magic of the moments placed after the cut? Or will this run of shows fall apart before the summer starts?

Instead, the outing fell just short of the greatness it aspired to, instead feeling more like patched-together songs with little narrative thread to connect them. But that's not to say we didn't enjoy it. Basically, there's no way to not enjoy ...

I will bet significant sums of money that this will not happen. The man’s face is clearly so fragile that it can barely withstand the rigors of daily life, let alone actually singing for over an hour. I don’t mean to be gross, but his face would literally rip apart if he actually tried to sing live.

It’s been obvious for years that all he had to do to make some cash, and start to rebuild his brand, was do a few big live appearances, and he’s never done it. I really believe he’s physically incapable of it.

    I think not!

I think MJ used to actually sing during performances (as anyone who caught his HBO special of the Dangerous Tour might have noticed back in ‘92). However, these days, I’d probably prefer a pre-recorded backing track.

And, yes, I would pay to see this. Probably not more than $100 (which will probably only be 1/5th of what the nosebleeds seats would cost), but I’d go.

@2ironic4u: Maybe they can also get a double to lip sync and dance for him. Like that one video where he was a gangster, (but not one of the good ones where he was a gangster), and dancing shots were either just feet, just face, or a mysterious Shadow Jackson.

@K-Rex: Hmmm, there are only really three videos that I can think of where he was a “gangster” and they were all excellent. “Smooth Criminal”, “Bad” and “Beat It”. Am I missing something?
