Happy 53rd birthday to R & B powerhouse Teena Marie, born on this day in 1956. Teena—née Mary Christine Brockert, also known as Lady T—had her biggest hit in the U.S. with her 1984 song “Lovergirl” (above). Not only does Teena have a set of pipes that any Idol contestant (or judge, for that matter) would envy, she’s had quite a lengthy career since she released her debut album in 1979 that’s continued to this day; a couple of songs reached the R & B chart over the past few years, and she’s apparently shopping around a new album for release later this year. A few of her other hits after the jump.

What about this one?
If you go “Lovergirl,” you’ve got to go for the extended version:
Dude, Teena. I saw her live like 5 years ago at one of those R&B throwback shows, and she KILLED. Amazing show.
