There is a Runaways movie in the works, with Twilight actress Kristen Stewart set to play Joan Jett and former child android Dakota Fanning angling to play hard-partying lead singer Cherie Currie. Currie was 15 when she joined the all-female hard rock group (best known for “Cherry Bomb”), so that makes Dakota Fanning the right age… if the movie concentrates on the Runaways era only. Does this mean the pic will glide over Currie’s marriage to Robert “Ted Striker” Hays? It’s trickier for a 15-year-old to play a 30-year-old than vice versa. The movie, called The Runaways at this point, will be directed by Floria Sigismondi, who’s no stranger to dramatizing popular song. [Variety]

give me Ellen Page as Joan Jett and i’ll watch this thing.
Every time I see the word Twilight, I automatically stop reading.
Doesn’t Joan Jett get to have a say in who plays her? Or is she still being punished for “Light of Day”?
Trying to cast Kim Fowley and all I get is Owen Wilson [bangs head].
@TopIdol: I think Joan Jett and Cherie Currie are involved in the development of the film.
@katesilver: Lucky you. This post’s headline immediately made me think of Bon Jovi. [groan]
Is Isla Fisher too old to play original bass player Jackie Fox? I certainly hope not.

@T’Challa: That seems pretty good!
Interesting. So, if things go right, she would be reversing Kristen Stewart’s path (Fanning is rumored to be playing Jane in New Moon)
still.
I like Ellen Page for Joan, we’ll see if this isnt’ going to be What We Do Is Secret, take 2
@KikoJones: Me too. Normally this requires me to make the obligatory I-despise-Bon-Jovi comment, but “Runaway” is actually possibly the only song of theirs I like.
The script starts with the Runaways forming and ends as they’re breaking up. There’s a coda set in 1981 where Cherie is working a supermarket checkout and she hears Joan being interviewed by Rodney on KROQ and she calls in to say hi. It’s fittingly sad. Great script, and Dakota Fanning is probably a smart choice. Rodney Bingenheimer pops up frequently, which is fun.
@clever epithet: damn, Cherie Currie working at a supermarket in ‘81. And to think, just a year earlier she was starring with Jodie Foster, Scott Baio(!) and Randy Quaid(!!) in the perennially overlooked movie “Foxes.”

@clever epithet: Oooh. Care to leak that script to Idolator?
