Get ready for American Idiot: The Musical, coming to a stage near you (if you live in the Bay Area) this September: Led by Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer, the show, based on the 2004 album by Green Day, will “follow working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration.” And! The Berkeley Repertory Theater, where Idiot is set to run from Sept. 4 through Oct. 11, will also premiere a musical based on Matthew Sweet’s Girlfriend during its upcoming season. So, uh, which one would you rather see? [Berkeley Rep / NYT]
