The California band Tera Melos have given “Hey Sandy,” the theme to Nickelodeon’s mid-’90s indie-rock Love Boat The Adventures Of Pete & Pete, a wonderfully chaotic spin, complete with video that pays homage to both the show’s opening credits and Brian Wilson. I’ve always loved this song. It’s been a long time since I reminisced about the awesomeness of Pete & Pete.
I feel loads more motivated to deal with my day now.
I love Pete & Pete (I am the right age for it, of course) but even for those who don’t, the Beach Boys breakdown at 0:42 (previewed in the still) is worth the price of admission.
I wish I was those guy’s friend.

I volunteer to do the Daria theme. The gears are turning…
1) It’s a crime that Season 3 isn’t out on DVD.
2) Polaris’s other stuff was actually really fucking good as well. Particularly “You’re Everywhere,” which is the one that the arpeggio/sad harmonica bit they sometimes scored bits of the show with was from.
3) The episode with Little Pete’s favorite song (also on the Polaris record) straight makes me weep. Can’t think of many other things that so innocently, eloquently, and (for me anyways) accurately get at the spirit and ethos underneath the whole DIY/indie idea.
4) Love the Beach Boys breakdown. Leftfield as fuck but seems natural. The reenactments are amazing, especially given how they pile on other jokes.
5) Artie went on to do Cotton’s voice in “King of the Hill.” He’s also apparently been on Venture Bros., 30 Rock, and Curb.
6)This song was allegedly about the Kent State Massacre.

Anyhow, the video captured many of the Pete and Pete intro’s details like like odd, flying bike.
The show was basically “Twin Peaks” for kids, eh?
I’m glad to see the Pete&Pete fans come out of the woodwork. My kids were the target demo for Pete&Pete more than I was, but it made me very nostalgic to watch it with them, because it may well be the truest capture of the feel of childhood. Plus, it managed to make it’s surrealism innocent and charming.
It was also a teaching moment for me with my kids. “Hey that’s Iggy Pop!” and I’d break out the LP of Raw Power and play it for them. Or “Hey that’s ‘Son of Mustang Ford’ by Swervedriver!” and I’d burn them a copy of “Raise.”
