The second episode of MTV’s attempt to bring the music video back to some of its programming hours, AMTV, aired in the wee hours of this morning. The six hours cut a relatively wide swath across the pop world, blending new clips (”If You Seek Amy” and “I Love College,” both of which were aired in full and as snippets) with vintage videos (”Let’s Go Crazy,” that really long live clip of “In Your Eyes”), a few pieces from MTV’s live-performance vault (mostly stuff from recent Spring Break trips, although the programmers did sneak in Jay-Z and the Roots performing “Big Pimpin” on MTV Unplugged), and bumpers with music that all but gave away the network’s demographic intentions (”Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Hangin’ Tough”).
The all-music programming, and the slightly lackluster commercials filling up the dead zones, made me think that the softening ad market might well result in music videos being more attractive to the network’s bottom-line-focused network executives than they were in the go-go bubble era. After all, those droids on The Hills get paid a lot for their cud-chewing and moon-facing, and who has money to burn on that sort of stuff these days? Anyhoo, below is the AMTV playlist from this morning’s effort—and note the cruel bit where whatever vengeful person programming the thing puts “Vogue” right after “Poker Face,” as if to say, “See what the problem is here, America?”

This just went from a curiosity thing to a must-TiVo-daily for me. I could cry, this is so close to what I wished for.
I love the placement of Depeche Mode’s “People are People” before “Knock You Down.”
Was the videoclip of Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” worn out from 35,000 plays in 1992?
Pearl Jam, “Jeremy”
Miley Cyrus, “The Climb”
I can imagine waking up far too early, watching this half asleep, and spending all of the next day convincing myself that I saw Miley Cyrus shoot herself in front of her horrified classmates on MTV.
@Marth: between this and metallica, you’re the best dude today
@tim_loves_cats: Thanks. That’s what I get for having nothing legitimate to add to the conversation.
@Chris Molanphy: Agreed. this list was really kinda awesome.
I was at the show they filmed that Kings of Leon video!
Being the one person who frequents these comments that likes KOL, I thought I’d share that. Flame on.
@Chris Molanphy: I’m with you. Getting a season pass for this when I get home.
@MayhemintheHood: You’re not alone. On either point. I like KOL and think I was at that show. Nokia Center, right?
And finally, I love seeing that they played “People are People.” I remember being in junior high and arguing that the song would make a great national anthem, if people ever got tired of Francis Scott Key. I stand by that contention.
I’m thinking that getting the programming gig for that slot would be really great. I am also setting my DVR right now.
But two Ting Tings? Really?
@How do I say this … THROWDINI!: Yep, that’s the one. I’d seen them many times before, thankfully, otherwise I think that crane would’ve eventually pissed me off.
@MayhemintheHood: I’ve somehow always been out of the town whenever they were win LA, so it was my first time seeing them. And I was far enough back that the crane didn’t really bother me. Fun show though.
Pink, “Sober” (snippet)
Jamie Foxx, “Blame It” (snippet)
Michael Jackson, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”
Somebody’s having fun with the programming, that’s for sure.
Someone at MTV doesn’t know how to use the Selector program - Song separation, people. Learn it. Live it. Love it.
@MayhemintheHood: Hey, what venue was that at out of curiosity?
Just like old MTV, there’s some stuff I love, some stuff I hate, and some stuff that’s wha? God bless.
@2ironic4u: Nokia Theatre…early October 2008, if I remember correct.
Add me to the list of people season passing this mother. Even if I don’t like 60% of the videos on there, they still are light years better than any of the other dreck on MTV.
The fact that we have to discuss this makes me feel like I’m on acid and that my childhood and teenage years never happened.
I USED TO WATCH TO VIDEOS. SERIOUSLY. FOR LIKE TWO HOURS. DON’T PUT ME IN THAT VAN!
fuse is seeing mtv and raising it by playing ‘right now,’ er, right now.
it’s apparently in honor of their rock hall coverage.
screw videos. just bring back beavis and butthead.
