Universal Music Group’s sales declined 6% in the fourth quarter of 2008, and revenues for the year were down 4.5% (although that decline is .2% when you adjust for currency). The biggest sellers of the year worldwide for the company: the Mamma Mia! soundtrack, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, Jack Johnson’s Sleep Through The Static, and—yes—Duffy’s Rockferry. That’s at least in part because Duffy’s Rockferry is a well-produced album. There, I said it.

Do I think she’s as talented as Adele, Winehouse or any of her Brit-soul contemporaries? No. I’ve seen her live on TV twice, and frankly the wobble in her voice annoys me.

But I near-loved that album: it’s brilliantly produced and has an unmistakable vibe; Bernard Butler & co. seem to know the gal’s limitations and make them work like gangbusters for the sound of the record. It really is like a ’60s album, in the way that a lot of those records were studio-driven creations. (Which is why I’m annoyed by the comparisons to Dusty in Memphis which is a whole ‘nother thing.)

Mind you, my saying the record’s worthy of praise doesn’t explain its massive sales (see Jack Johnson, above). I’m just saying it caught on for a reason.
