The late Law & Order star’s version of “Try To Remember” from The Fantasticks was one of 40 songs from American musicals that were pre-loaded onto the iPod given to Queen Elizabeth by President Barack Obama on the occasion of his visit to Buckingham Palace yesterday. The playlist also included Ethel Merman’s “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “One” from A Chorus Line, and Judy Collins’ performance of “Send In The Clowns.” I have to say, though, that putting that song about 525,600 minutes being in a year from Rent instead of something from Bye Bye Birdie? A very major gaffe. Full playlist after the jump.

Obama’s iPod gift includes 40 Broadway show tunes [AP]

No “The Internet is for Porn”?
Somebody should have told him she’s not that kind of queen. Hey! Now you can skip the late night monologues.
Nothing from Hedwig?
But was the iPod embossed?
@K-Rex: Awesome!
oh, now i get that 525,600 minutes joke in that colbert report/glenn beck thing i keep seeing. thanks!
@K-Rex: Srsly when is Idolator going to add a “This Comment Is Amazing” button.
@K Rex – LOL!
Not much creativity here…it’s just the Ultimate Broadway collection released in ‘96 on Arista:

@Christian John: oh, boooo
The gifts Obama keeps giving to dignitaries seem like the type of thing I would give to dignitaries. Which is to say, they suck.
If you’re going to load up an iPod, why would you stick to a two disc set? Why not go whole hog and get a genre “spanning” Rhino box set or something. Or a few Rhino box sets.
On the other hand, he could have put Throbbing Gristle’s TG24 on there. I can’t even begin to imagine the expressions on the queen’s face that listening session would conjure.
@Lokimotive: I support the gift. I doubt the Queen of England cares that this is a previously compiled set of songs. The gift is the songs. Do you imagine she’s complaining that some obscure ballad from PACIFIC OVERTURES wasn’t included by a knowing White House staffer?
@Idolator: See what I did there with PACIFIC OVERTURES in caps to contrast the song “Poems” in quotes? Love, Musical Theater Nerdfest
@K-Rex: Zing!
@SkyHits: They also gave her a songbook signed by Richard Rogers, so they’re getting a little better. And she gave the same signed photograph of HERSELF that she gives to everybody. I put HERSELF in caps to emphasize what a jack-ass you have to be to give anyone you’re not sleeping with a signed and framed picture of yourself.
Maybe I’ve ridden the MTA one two many times, but when I hear “The Gift of Jerry Orbach” I just assume that means his eyes.
Isn’t Phantom of the Opera an Andrew Lloyd Webber joint and therefore not American? What’s the criteria?
@SkyHits: I love you.
@K-Rex: Jimmy Fallon used your joke in his monologue Thursday night. Royalties!
@Maciej: One TOO many times, you idiot.
