Happy Opening Day: Get Your Favorite Fight Song Ready

Yes, we can finally say that spring has sprung in about two hours, when the New York Mets and the Cincinnati Reds take the field at Great American Ball Park to open Opening Day. In honor of this fantastic news, here is the baseball-themed perennial “Meet The Mets,” written for the team’s inaugural season and still played at the park (with a few gender-based lyrical tweaks) today. I’m not even going to let this disturbing clip of Mike Francesa and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo singing the same song in happier times dampen my enthusiasm!

I should also probably note that I was going to post a video of Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo singing the Goo Goo Dolls as a “counterpoint” to “Meet The Mets,” but then I came across the news that he’s suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome that might push him to the DL and limit him to vocal duties on any musical endeavors, and I figured that would just be mean. So instead, here is a pretty great Lego video of Danny Kaye’s “D-O-D-G-E-R-S”:

I’m gonna have to go with this one, cuz I really, really don’t like “Tessie”.

Mets fan for life. Maura, you beat me to the punch posting this video. Here’s hoping that the 2009 season won’t end with me drinking till I can’t feel feelings while everyone here in Philly continues to rub my nose in it.

    Living in enemy territory sucks.

Love it Maura! I knew I could count on you for an Opening Day-related post. And with an ode to my beloved boys in blue. Sweet. Opening day, the best day of the year.

I should have posted Nick Lachey, since he is apparently throwing out the first pitch at Mets-Reds. If it gets played through, that is. It’s supposed to rain and snow all day. Gametime as of now is 1:20…

As I Tigers fan, I never get sick of this video, particularly for the completely inexplicable cameo at about 1:28.

In fact, watching that just now will probably be the high point of the season.

@Ted Striker: oh, lastings. how i miss him.

and speaking of jorge sosa, yesterday i went to not-shea (second time in a weekend!) and there was a huge rack of game-worn jerseys … that were originally worn by the likes of aaron heilman, scott schoeneweis, and jorge sosa. a perfect present for anyone in your life you’d like to gift with a jinx.

Thanks to my dad (RIP) I grew up following both NY teams–before the Mets broke my heart more intensely than any girl ever would–and this jingle has been tattooed in my brain:

Now as a guitar-playing adult–and a Yankee fan–this one kinda sums it up for me:
