"American Idol opened the evening for Fox with a healthy 21.99 million viewers and a 7.8 rating/22 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. But as good as that is, last year it averaged a beefier 22.67 million viewers and a 9.2/14 in the demo (on Tuesday, April 8, 2008). Since about eight additional minutes of American Idol bled into the 9 p.m. half-hour, results for the return of Fringe at 9 p.m. (Viewers: #3, 11.48 million; A18-49: #1, 4.5/11) are approximate."

I've had no reason to truly hate American Idol till last night. Not being a fan of the Christina Agulera ululation style of singing that's so highly lauded on the show I've been content to simply ignore the show and hopefully be part of the downward trend in the ratings which will hopefully lead to the show's demise.

But last night. Last night that tone deaf American Banstandarization of mad world made Frige "DVR Proof". My DVR tapped the last worthless minutes of that horrible tripe only to then CUT OFF THE last few minutes of Fringe. Now I'll have to wait for a rerun to see what happened to the psychic kid.

Damn you American Idol. I hope that show dies in a FIRE!

Why does he sing like that? And what is there to like? Impressive vocal range, for sure, but could you actually listen to an entire album with someone singing like that?

@Nicolars: Seriously. The key quote in that intro was the Dad's, "Sports, not so much." How very 2009/post-Prop 8/week-of-Iowa-and-Vermont: the paradigm of reluctant-but-loving fatherly acceptance of a gay son. It's stuff like that that makes me root a little for Adam.

At this point, the judges have gotten so predictable in their praises/criticisms, you can't see it coming a mile away as soon as the contestants start singing - basically, if you decide to stay in the box they've made for you (Anoop=ballad singer, Matt=Timberfake, Lil=Mary J./Keshia) they will love you, otherwise they will every which way possible to bash the performance.

Another lesson from last night: anyone who is told to perform in the pit, get ready for a critical spanking and a spot in the bottom 3 (hard to believe that, as middling as Kris's performance was and as godawful as Scott was, the former seems to be the bottom vote-getter this week).

Also, Gokey's performance sounded less like "Mickey Gilley's version of 'Stand By Me'" than "'Stand By Me' as sung over a wimpy version of Donna Summer's 'Last Dance'".

I’m so, so bored at this point with Season 8. This is the first time I didn’t wanna write a twice-weekly blog post about the show since I started doing ‘em for the Houston Press music blog a few months ago, but I just felt totally unsurprised and uninspired and indifferent. Yep, Adam Lambert blew my mind again in a good way, but otherwise it was all so boring and dull. Some people yo-yo’d up or down, others were forgettable, etc. Whatever.
