Marilyn Chambers’ Disco Past

Porn star and Ivory Snow model Marilyn Chambers passed away yesterday at age 56. She left behind quite the legacy of pornographic work, and appeared in adult films as recently as last year. She was the lead in Behind the Green Door, which, along with Deep Throat, helped push pornography at least partially out of smoke-filled theaters and into the mainstream. She was also one of the first actresses to make points on a film; she made 1% of profits on Green Door.

Besides her appearance on the Ivory Snow box, Chambers made various bids for mainstream success, notably appearing in David Cronenberg’s Rabid. What I didn’t see in very many obits yesterday was a discussion of her 1976 disco single, “Benihana.” While it’s not terrible by any stretch, I wish I could say it was some sort of lost masterpiece. It’s produced by Michael “Let’s All Chant” Zager, and it features a pentatonic kyoto intro to go along with the Benihana theme. It’s definitely of the panting, post-”Love To Love You Baby” variety, and probably NSFW:

She certainly didn’t hide from her pornographic reputation with this one, and word is that this kept her from ever breaking through to a wider audience. All of the orgasmic panting probably didn’t help!

    Removed! Try this.

S@Chris N.: Sigh. That’s an edited version, but that’s the gist of it!

….and this is how I know that men are the audience for Idolator.

@slowburn: Really? I wanted to highlight something else she did that was interesting. I tried not to be salacious.

I feel like there are a fair amount of ladies around here, right?

    RIGHT?

    Okay. Maybe I’m wrong…

I actually put this track up on my blog a few months ago, I’ll probably repost it tonight.

@Lucas Jensen: I had never ever heard of this woman and I was just fine that way. Yes, there are a number of women on Idolator but every so often I get reminded that there must be far more men.

    @How do I say this … THROWDINI!: Uh-huh.

It’s got a very Fly Robin Fly thing going on there. It’s no Let’s All Chant, that’s for sure.

@slowburn: I’m not saying there aren’t a lot of men here, but this site is hardly a sausage fest in terms of content. Maura wrote that breast post! And Marilyn Chambers was pretty darned famous, much like Harry Reams and Linda Lovelace from Deep Throat. These movies were huge cultural events in the 70s, making hundreds of millions together.

@menyc: Fly Robin Fly ain’t a bad comparison. That video was had notorious nudity.

@How do I say this … THROWDINI!: nah, that’s actually exhibit q in my ongoing ‘we have to play to the googlers sometimes’ series. see also american idol, sex-tape debunking, etc.

and hey, ladies watch porn too! i actually first saw marilyn during some late-night showtime watching a long time ago.

Funny, this sounds less like Zager and more like Dr. Buzzard. Not as good as that, though.

For the record, this song did not chart on the Hot 100, unlike that porn-star disco classic “More, More, More” by Andrea True Connection.

@Chris Molanphy: Thanks for the clarification. I read it in a few obits, but it came from (guess what?!) Wikipedia and some fan page. I could find no mention of it in anything official.

@Maura Johnston: Hey, I’m not hating. On playing to the googlers or the ladies watch porn too. In fact, that should be a tag — playing to the googlers. Or “ladies watch porn too.” Or both.
