Welcome To The Sort Of New Idolator: Please Make Sure Your Nametag Is On That Table In The Hall

So, you may have noticed that things look a bit different around here. That’s because after a year of being in a weird code limbo between Gawker and Buzznet, we’ve moved over to our new home, which has Wordpress under the hood and which should prove to solve at least a few of the issues that have plagued the site over the past 12 months. Still, you may have questions! Most of them should be answered after the jump.

• If you have a commenter account that has an e-mail address attached, you can reset your password with our lost password page. Which now works! For real!

• If you have a commenter account but it doesn’t have an e-mail address attached, you can do one of two things: You can drop me a line with your username and I’ll get things sorted, or you can register anew. (You’ll be able to keep anonymity / pseudonymity; just use a throwaway e-mail account from a service like GMail or, if you really want to keep things on the DL, Mailinator.)

• If your commenter account has mysteriously gone missing (owenmeany and sydbarrett05–I know this has happened to you), e-mail me (mauraATidolatorDOTcom) and I’ll go on the hunt for your data. (This may take a day or two.)

• If you read Idolator via RSS feed, nothing should really change, although if your feed drops off after a while, please let me know.

• If you notice any other bugs–any at all!–or just stuff that annoys you, drop me a line as well. The flexibility afforded by Wordpress will allow us to make more design tweaks; as we settle into our new home, these tweaks should become more comfortable. It’ll be like breaking in a new pair of shoes that look just like your old favorite ones! And that won’t go mysteriously missing when you’re in the middle of wearing them.

Oh. well this answers a couple of my questions but not the one about where the user activity/post history has gone.

I know the comment moderation’s going to piss me off to no end.

And I just noticed that, OMG, you’re on my second favorite radio station now. Yay!

@DocStrange: nah, this is just finally clearing the dust after the sale to buzznet. which happened a year ago! time flies…

  3. by DocStrange at 11:48 pm

and speaking of passwords, I had to reset mine…to some sort of word soup thing i’m never going to remember. Just exactly how do I change my password?

  4. by DocStrange at 11:51 pm

“You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page”.

Eh. I’ll try to remember the word soup thing. Firefox already seems to have assimilated it into my various passwords.

  5. by Maura at 11:52 pm

@DocStrange: ok. i’ll get an answer for you, i swear.

  6. by brasstax at 11:53 pm

Same here. If it can’t be changed, I’ll just hang on to the email it came in.

  7. by Thierry at 11:54 pm

As far as I can tell, my username no longer appears as anything but a blank (this is Thierry). Also, all my data is gone, and that link above gets me the following message: You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.

  8. by DocStrange at 11:55 pm

yeah. You guys are always really fast about my crazy ramblings about technical problems. Unlike some websites in my favorites list (*cough* last.fm *cough*).

  9. by Thierry at 11:56 pm

Never mind about the blank thing.

My favourite part of the new Idolator at this point is the tiny pictures of Mischa Barton I get instead of any of the top stories at the top of the page.

    @DocStrange: well, thanks :)

    This is a test?

  17. by fabulousrobots at 8:05 am

Neato! I hope it works better! It certainly looks pretty.

  18. by Lucas Jensen at 8:27 am

Wait. It does the smiles now? Does it do the poop? ~@~ Please work.

  19. by Lucas Jensen at 8:28 am

Darn it. You can’t respond to yourself either! Somebody call the Wahmbulance.

    :(:)

  20. by Lucas Jensen at 8:28 am

That was a pig. It obviously doesn’t conform to gmail’s high standards of emoticon-making.

  21. by TriedandTrue at 9:20 am

I am testing. I, too, cannot change my password.

  22. by Maura at 9:59 am

    @TriedandTruehey can you e-mail me?

  23. by DocStrange at 11:27 am

and what’s with the post histories? All my posts are still around, but they don’t appear in my post history.

I’ll take it that it’ll be fixed soon though. As I mentioned above, you guys aren’t last.fm slow because you’re a blog and whatnot.

I log in to Gawker Media sites using “Hyman_Decent” (without quotes) but here I now have to log in using “HymanDecent”. So one can’t use the underscore in one’s login name? Also, I like my name to be displayed as “Hyman Decent”; let’s see if it shows up that way.

I take it that changing my password here won’t change my password for Gawker Media sites.

Can I now use this account to log in to other Wordpress sites?

    • by Maura at 12:11 pm

i can fix the commenter name display for you — give me one second. it would seem that the underscores aren’t allowed.
(i am also testing replies from the admin panel. sexy?)

  25. by MameDennis at 11:38 am

    Woohoo! I’m in!

  26. by Maura at 11:50 am

@DocStrange: i’m actually not sure if those are coming back. which is a bummer. something about databases and tables.

  27. by Jerkwheat at 1:47 pm

Victory! I figured out the maze of confusion in getting my account to finally log-in
