Rumor has it that Jay-Z has signed the Sugababes to an American record deal, some five years after their track “Hole In The Head” became their lone single to break this country’s Hot 100. While I’m all for better girl groups making inroads into the Scherzinger/O’Day-strangled market, let’s just hope that bringing the ‘Babes to the States’ ever-diminishing pop consciousness doesn’t result in the girls being relegated to “featured” status on a bunch of other peoples’ tracks–or winding up in a situation similar to the one that ensuedthe last time Jay plucked a hopeful from across the pond. I’m hoping they’re still the Sugababes, and not some watered-down excessively hip-hopped version. Think we’ll get an American-only Greatest Hits to introduce them, or go straight in with new material?
I feel like Siobhan and Mutya are laughing at this development and I don’t quite know why.
I still say “Easy” should’ve been a hit here, and it’s still recent enough (no older than, say, September’s “Cry for You” was last year) to make re-promoting it here plausible.
