Coldplay Drummer Embarks On “Beat-Making Odyssey,” Loses The Rest Of His Band

April 29th, 2009 // 9 Comments

A roadie for Coldplay posts a dispatch on the band’s blog: “Will has a new toy for drum programming which has sent him on a beat-making odyssey. He rolls up today with a new idea and announces cheerfully to all that, ‘It’s in seven four time and it’s 168 bpm’. For those of you less versed in music theory, ‘Seven four time’ means that when he kicks off the drum machine, everyone spends a lot of time asking, ‘Where’s the one?’. Meanwhile, ’168 bpm’ means that everyone is getting confused very quickly.

” Here’s hoping the “rich, complex weave” that ensues sounds kinda like a syncopated version of this. [Coldplay via Q]

  1. 7/4 time also means you are a serious Artist.

  2. When can we expect that Venetian Snares remix of “Viva la Vida”?

  3. @Billy C.: Coldplay doesn’t deserve to be remixed by Venetian Snares. Timbaland is whore enough to do it though, let him have a go at it.

The one is always on the one – there’s no mystery there, even if you can’t find it. And the beat is still in quarter notes.. for those of you who need a reference the main riff to “Money” by Pink Floyd is in 7/4. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (repeat).

Coldplay should be the official soundtrack for nap-time everywhere.

  4. @Vulture.Protein: i think we all as a community should take up VP’s advice and look into this “pink floyd” band. has anyone heard of them before? also, let’s look into “the beatles” and possibly this thing i keep hearing about called “music.”

  5. @Chainsaw Dick: Vulture.Protein: owenmeany, without the sense of irony.

  6. @Maura:

The Grateful Dead have a few songs in 7/4 (“Estimated Prophet” being one), and one song called “The Eleven” (and a few bootlegs of them doing “The Seven” too).

  7. Also, Genesis’s (did I spell this wright?) “Turn it on” is in 7/4 too.
