Surely I’m not the only person who wishes that some enterprising audio editor out there would re-edit Midnight Run in an effort to remove the forced jauntiness imposed upon it by its music?

Fun post.

As you imply, nostalgia always comes parceled in 20-year cycles: so '50s nostalgia in the '70s (American Graffiti, Happy Days); '60s nostalgia in the '80s (Platoon, The Wonder Years); '70s nostalgia in the '90s (Dazed and Confused, That '70s Show); etc.

And it usually starts bubbling up in the final years of the decade prior -- '80s nostalgia just started to peek through at the very end of the '90s, and we're just starting to see glimmers of '90s nostalgia now that will come crashing through after 2011 or so. As with all things cultural, you usually see it in music first, then TV and movies (the slower-moving media) follow later.

It's generational and totally normal. I broke it all down in a blog post five years ago, when the '80s revival was in full swing.
