Kanye West’s video for “Paranoid” has leaked in a higher quality, so you can appreciate the Wendy O. Williams-meets-a-guitar aesthetics of the bedclothes Rihanna wears in the clip. It’s sort of a dancing-dream-meets-driving-dream, and Rihanna looks really great–and for some reason, it took all these listens for me to realize that the song sounds a lot like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps.” Am I crazy? Hope this video turns this song into the summer jam it was always meant to be. One of my favorite tracks on the album.
It doesn’t *sound* like “Maps,” though it does have a sound-alike line in it (”They don’t know you like I do” / “They don’t love you like I love you”).
This is probably my single favorite Kanye song, since it sounds like SPEAK & SPELL-era Depeche Mode, and I also hope it’s a big ol’ summer hit. And yeah Rihanna looks great, her stylist is a genius, etc.
I love that Kanye’s almost a non-entity in this video. Some part of my brain that is stuck in the early ’90s is moved to describe that as “daring.”
The music reminds me of the cut off “1999″ album by Prince(yes, another reference)”Something In The Water Does Not Compute”.

I will say that I haven’t seen a pop star have so much fun as Kanye seems to have had over the past few months in a long time. . . at least one who seems to have enjoyed the things associated with his actual day job. Anyone, after all, can have a blast jumping from after party to after party and selling perfume by riding a wave-runner (cough, cough).
He sings about as good as he reads.
