Kanye West’s video for “Paranoid” has leaked in a higher quality, so you can appreciate the Wendy O. Williams-meets-a-guitar aesthetics of the bedclothes Rihanna wears in the clip. It’s sort of a dancing-dream-meets-driving-dream, and Rihanna looks really great–and for some reason, it took all these listens for me to realize that the song sounds a lot like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps.” Am I crazy?     I will say that I haven't seen a pop star have so much fun as Kanye seems to have had over the past few months in a long time. . . at least one who seems to have enjoyed the things associated with his actual day job. Anyone, after all, can have a blast jumping from after party to after party and selling perfume by riding a wave-runner (cough, cough).

    The music reminds me of the cut off "1999" album by Prince(yes, another reference)"Something In The Water Does Not Compute".
  • I love that Kanye's almost a non-entity in this video. Some part of my brain that is stuck in the early '90s is moved to describe that as "daring."
  • It doesn't *sound* like "Maps," though it does have a sound-alike line in it ("They don't know you like I do" / "They don't love you like I love you").

    This is probably my single favorite Kanye song, since it sounds like SPEAK & SPELL-era Depeche Mode, and I also hope it's a big ol' summer hit. And yeah Rihanna looks great, her stylist is a genius, etc.
