R. Kelly Has A Tape That He’s Happy To Release

June 3rd, 2009 // 7 Comments

After a long post-acquittal silence that was punctuated by a couple of dissatisfying tracks, R. Kelly has returned to the full-length world with The Demo Tape, a DJ Skee/DJ Drama-produced mix that finds him taking on “Birthday Sex,” “Turn My Swag On,” and other hits of recent-ish vintage alongside some brand-new songs that might be on his forthcoming, untitled full-length (which I guess is replacing 12 Play: Fourth Quarter on the release docket).

“I took it all the way back to when I first started; all I had was my demo,” Kells told MTV. “It’s a way to start fresh, be humble. It’s like being a new artist. This is my demo tape for my fans.” Two warnings: There’s a fair amount of Autotune, and there’s even more super-explicit lyrics, as you might expect from a collection that includes songs titled “P.U.S.S.Y. Cry” and “Fuck Every Girl”–the latter finds R. bragging about his “dick and a half”–so you might want to get some headphones before taking time out of your work day to tune in.

  1. The Autotune is really odd. This isn’t Kanye we’re talking about. Kells can actually sing…..

  2. @Joe Gross: Jamie Foxx did it to and the song blew up. I guess you gotta do what the kids like these days. I’m still confused why “In The Kitchen (Remix)” wasn’t the biggest summer jam of that year.

  3. After that godawful Chris Cornell mixtape, I’m not sure I’m willing to sample another one of DJ Skee’s offerings just yet.

  4. @Thierry: it’s R. Kelly, dude. my balls could put out the mixtape and it would rule.

  5. @Chainsaw Dick: Fair point, though I wish he’d taken his cues from überfan The-Dream instead of Jamie Foxx.

  6. Job

“Tip the Waiter” is solid gold.
