Soul Singer To Snap!: “I’m Gonna Get Your Royalties, Baby”

Soul singer Jocelyn Brown is suing the German pop group Snap! for £10 million over their 1990 jock jam / movie trailer / sweet-16 staple “The Power,” saying that the iconic “I’ve got the pow-ahh!” yelp that serves as the song’s foundation was actually nicked from her 1986 single “Love’s Gonna Get You,” which hit No. 1 on the dance charts. Brown says that she deserves half of the royalties realized from the song because of her contributions. All that ubiquity sure adds up, doesn’t it? For those of you who’d like to do a compare-and-contrast, Brown’s ode to her power is at the 2:19 mark of the clip located after the jump.

For their part, Snap!–a.k.a. producers Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti–has claimed that the vocal on “The Power” is actually a really convincing impression of Brown and not a sample, but the two certainly sound nearly identical to these ears. First Zelma Davis is outed as a fake lip-syncer, and now the chick in “The Power” video? All my Club MTV-crafted illusions are being shattered in 18-year increments!

  1. Everything is better with Snap dancers.

  2. Okay, yeah, it sounds the same.

  3. Well, Turbo B did declare himself the lyrical Jesse James, which implies thievery. Perhaps he gave the Snap! production team some ideas.

  4. Next you’ll tell me Catherine Quinol didn’t sing “Everybody Everybody” or “Strike It Up.”

    The reality, it burns.

  5. She’s just realizing this now? Isn’t there a statute of limitations?

  6. @slowburn: I guess things got kind of hectic… for 19 years.

  7. @Maura: Snap, indeed!
