The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy is participating in Infinite Summer, in which people read David Foster Wallace’s mammoth tour de force Infinite Jest between June 21 and September 21, and in a post on the readathon’s official site he talks about how he’s actually owned the book for about 12 years but hasn’t quite gotten around to reading it yet. (OK, so I’m posting this in part because I’m going to read–ahem, reread–IJ as part of this too, and I was wondering if any of you all out there were as well. Summer starts Sunday! It can’t come soon enough!) [Infinite Summer]

  1. I own it, but have not finished (er, read) it. Sounds like a plan.

  2. s.

I got it a few weeks ago to read as a summer project, so I’m in.

  3. @s.: same here. bought this in march but was too busy to read it. today marks the beginning of my summer, so i’m going to settle in with IJ and The Intelligent Investor and reconnect with my inner nerd.

  4. The first chapter is a bit intimidating, but once you get past that, it’s not a terribly difficult read. Also, it’s awesome. Good luck.

  5. I read the first chapter and thought “I don’t have time for this ‘genius’” so I stopped and read some Elmore Leonard books with better characterization and dialogue.

  6. i will use this event as an excuse to finally give this book that i’ve been hearing so much about for so long a shot.
    if i remember.

  7. I got this book on Amazon in February and haven’t been in the mood to crack it open yet…guess now is the time even though I just started re-reading The Gunslinger.
