U2 Remember The Days When They Used To Rule The World Of Mobile-Music Ads

picture-1Surely I am not the only person who, while watching yesterday’s epic Wimbledon men’s final, did a double-take when a commercial featuring the music of U2 first flickered on the screen. “Wait, is that an iPod ad?” I thought as a series of lens flares flew around my TV, behind Bono and his band of merry men. As it turns out, I was wrong–but not that wrong.

Ladies and gents, Blackberry Presents U2 In The Style Of That Coldplay iTunes Ad!

No, really… that’s the new ad for Blackberry’s synergy with the former iPod endorsers, which I guess got the OK since the ads for the new iPhone are less music video-ish? Anyway, apparently this is all leading up to a new mobile-only version of No Line On The Horizon that will include some sort of social networking component. No adding Bono as a friend, no credibility!

My wife had XM on last night and Echo and the Bunnymen on, whom she’d never really heard before. She said “Wow, are they ripping off U2 or what?” At which I laughed uproariously.

What a waste of an album, barely even cracking double-digits on my iTunes Play Count. I’ve got Black Keys albums with more plays. But that mix in the commercial is actually interesting, and at least more intriguing than the one on the album.
