Coldplay Go Around Breaking Young Girls’ Hearts

coldplayColdplay took some time out of their Saturday show at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wash., to pay homage to the late Michael Jackson, with a cover of “Billie Jean” that’s much less bombastic than the Chris Cornell/David Cook and much more slap-bassy than the original. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin muffs the lyrics here and there, but luckily every member of the crowd is there to fill in during those awkward moments. Clip after the jump.

Not bad, although for some reason the words “ren faire” flashed through my mind at one point during the performance. Also, while fact-checking the date of this show, I found that on Sept. 18 and 19 the band will be supported by White Lies, as well as Jay-Z… and the UK pop powerhouse Girls Aloud!? Oh, the collaborations that will result! It’ll be like one of those mash-up albums from 2001 come to life, only a lot more expensive.

No slap bass on this. No bass at all, in fact. Two guitars, and I think Guy’s in the back playing a… ukelele? Mandolin? We never really see it.

@Fiona Grapefruit: it sounds slap bass-ish to these ears.

Not bad, not great. The main thing Martin adds to it is the falsetto vocal, which is nice. Otherwise, this is pretty flat and half-hearted.
