Róisín Murphy, Chaka Khan, And Micachu Can Read Your Thoughts Right Now

July 14th, 2009 // 9 Comments

Chaka Khan has teamed up with five other female musicians—Róisín Murphy, Sinéad O’Connor, Micachu, thecocknbullkid, and Alessi’s Ark—and recorded a cover of her disco classic “I’m Every Woman” to benefit the British charity ActionAid, which tries to help women who are living in impoverished conditions around the world.

The song, which was executive-produced by Epic Records president Amanda Ghost, is available as a free download from the nonprofit’s site, and while it’s a fairly sleepy take on the song given the cast of characters (I was hoping for more left-field bleeping and ground-up dance elements), the charity it benefits is more than worth supporting. Here’s Murphy talking about the project and her performance style:

  1. Love Roisin, don’t love the performance. I’m looking forward to her next CD. (And I wish she would come to the States!)

  2. @craigp: she needs to come here and put gaga in her placeplace.

related to this post: i think ‘golden phone’ is one of my top 3 songs of the year.

  3. In a just world she’d put Gaga in her place, but Roisin’s approach is too cerebral and slightly detached to really hit big in the U.S. We want lyrics about how we’re too drunk to know our own name but let’s dance anyway…

    And what’s “Golden Phone”?

  4. Dammit, when is thecocknbullkid gonna hit stateside. I’m tired of waiting!

  5. @allenglandclub: EP coming this fall or something, so maybe she’ll play a few shows?

  6. @Maura: Yeah, it’s going on my “Best of 2009″ mixtape for sure. Why don’t women like Lily Allen and Micachu come out of America?

  7. It’s a bit of a slow burner. It’s growing on me though. Hey, if you download the track from the website and tell six people you get a free Bat For Lashes track. That’s definitely worth it. I love her!

  8. @Maura: seriously. thanks for bringing micachu into my world. Seeing her for a second time this year at siren! should be weird hearing those songs out in a festival environment.
