Jay-Z To Fill In For The Beastie Boys In New Jersey

jayAfter the Beastie Boys were forced to pull out of their upcoming tour because of Adam “MCA” Yauch being diagnosed with a tumor on his salivary gland, there was much speculation over who would replace the outfit at their two U.S. festival appearances in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were announced as the Beasties’ replacements at Lollapalooza, which takes place the weekend of Aug. 7-9; last night the All Points West festival announced that headlining next Friday’s opening show would be none other than Jay-Z, who will be making his first American appearance at one of these multi-day extravaganzas. It’s definitely a coup for All Points West, which to these eyes needed a bit more oomph in its booking so as to avoid becoming “the East Coast cousin of Coachella, only with less interesting ‘gets.’ ” And at least it’s better news for New Jerseyans than the other stuff happening this morning! The poster with the freshly updated lineup is below.

Jay-Z, Eminem, and Rick Ross Are Never Too Old For Rap
Jay-Z just did a wildly popular album with Kanye West, Watch the Throne. And Eminem received two Grammy nominations this year after getting ten nods, more than anyone else, in 2011. The Beastie Boys are no spring chickens, but they're still going strong.

From Jay-Z to Run DMC, Eminem to The Fray, Lady Gaga to The Beastie Boys, you’ll be sure to enjoy something a little different from traditional lullabies and nature sounds. Jammy Jams generously sent us two of their melodic lullaby albums on CD format.

  1. Does the poster represent billing order of the bands? Because I didn’t realize Gogol Bordello was *that* popular.

  2. They’re one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen, so they probably got a near-headliner position because of that.

  3. @LostTurntable: yeah, I was going to say, they had a huge crowd eating out of the palms of their hands at Coachella last year.

  4. I have to admit, the billing does seem a tiny bit arbitrary.

Related: has Shearwater always been on the bill??!! How did I miss that?

  5. With very few exceptions, the musical acts seem to range from yeah-whatever to tear-my-ears-off-with-pliers, but the real crime is “CollegeHumor Live.” Really? And which Janeane Garofalo are we gonna get – half-baked pop-culture-critiquing anti-comedy Janeane, or spittle-flecked political harangue Janeane? The latter might be funnier.

  6. Hova Hova Hova Hova!

  7. So Lollapalooza gets YYYs to fill in and All Points West gets Jay-Z?

Lollapalooza fucked up. I mean, don’t get me wrong. The YYYs are fine, but they are manifestly not a replacement for the Beastie Boys.

    Jay-z, however…
