Play Weezer Off, Keyboard Cat

chocolateweezWeezer debuted a couple of new songs at concerts in Korea over the weekend, and oh man are they just craptastic enough to be tailor-made for “ironic” videos featuring Internet personalities! (One, called “The Girl Got Hot,” even opens with the line “I went to a party last Saturday night,” thus paving the way for Lita Ford to play Keyboard Cat’s cougar-tastic mom in the attendant clip.) I’ll place the videos of the two performances after the jump and avail from further comment, except to note that Carrie Brownstein, formerly of Sleater-Kinney and attempted Phish fandom, pretty much summed up what bugs me about Viral Internet-Era Weezer thusly: “I don’t know if Weezer hates its fans or just the (apparently) stifling concept of sincerity, but you should listen to these two new songs if you weren’t already convinced of Weezer’s contempt for music.” Yeah, pretty much. To the tunes!

Weezer: The Ultimate Novelty Band [Monitor Mix]

It's sad that a guy that started out wanting to be a Brian Wilson for the 1990s has turned into a Mike Love for the new millennium (right down to the stupid dancing and focusing on novelty songs about teenage girls when you're pushing 40).
  • These songs are even worse than I imagined. And the front man performance from River's is just sad. There is only one Diamond Dave.

MayhemintheHood nailed it with the Offspring reference. These songs reaffirm my hunch that Weezer's brilliant debut was a one-shot deal. They should have closed up shop after Pinkerton. Matt Sharp hasn't made huge inroads on his own since his departure but at least he knew when to leave. Make Believe and the red album are farces. How can an artist come up with singles like Pork & Beans, Beverly Hills, plus these new songs - and expect to retain credibility? Rivers Cuomo is doing a great job of dismantling fans' respect. Sorry, Lax_Dangerhouse, I'm with Carrie Brownstein.
  • I don't really see the problem with the songs. They're better than Beverly Hills. They have a little bit of the annoying ironic "lol pop music" thing going on, but all this "sincerity" nonsense Brownstein's harking on really gets me.

Since when does Rivers just sing and Pat play guitar??

Has anyone seen the Weezer show they're playing on Palladia? It's heartbreaking to see them tear through Across The Sea and then go into Brian Bell doing his best elvis costello impersonation to "Why Bother?" They even changed the lyrics!

"It's not for real so you'd better get packin'!"
  • I've said that about them for a few years now, that they've taken the Offspring route and decided to just make joke songs.

I should read Carrie Brownsteins stuff more often. She figured out that Weezer writes bad music nowadays and that Phish is okay...not bad, but not great. Great story; compelling, and rich.
