Woohoo! It’s an endless loop of stale MTV Hits playlists! Glad to see MTV getting back to its roots. Or something.
(Aside: I hate that Wisin y Yandel video. Perhaps novel to the rest of you people, it’s the latest in a long line of overproduced bombast from those guys. Plus, “Mujeres in the Club” is so much more amusing.)
Also, someone explain Breakthrough Video to me — haven’t half these artists already um, broken through? Srlsly.
(Oh! Glad to see some love for “Love Lockdown,” even if “Paranoid” is shaping up to be the best video from 808s …)
Thoughts:
1. Wisin & Yandel for Best Pop Video? Like, I’m really up for some diversity, but that nom doesn’t even make sense.
2. I can’t believe Matt & Kim got some love! Those guys rock, and most likely won’t get the award, but a little recognition doesn’t hurt.
3. HUMAN BEHAVIOR FTW!!1!!
@michaela: Breakthrough Award is for the actual video, not the artist. It’s supposed to be for videos pushing the envelope and stuff.
@fre2daa: Surely there was one non-blog-rock band that made a technically innovative video this year?
@Maura: I wouldn’t know, I’m too bloggy!
@fre2daa: aww <3
You’d think the amount of times they played the “G Thing” video it would be have a Moonman. Oh well.
Asher Roth’s label must have paid a ton. Also, how old is that Pink video? Did she not make any others from that album? That actually makes me a little sad.
@cassidy2099: there were videos for ’sober’ and ‘please don’t leave me,’ but neither of them did very well.
Is it fair to be bummed that not one artist who can fall under the “rock” category is up for video of the year?
Also, REALLY hope Green Day takes Best Rock Video (I’m kinda worried Kings Of Leon will win).
I’m trying to think of a VIDEO (not song) from this year that should be on this list and is not.
@Maura: I really like the Please Don’t Leave Me video. But then, when I was little my mom used to make me watch Misery every time it came on HBO.
I just watched the Abusadora video thinking it would be the one technically cool video that always gets nominated even though MTV would never play it, even if they did show videos. But, mmmm, nope.
Also, boo to MTV giving the Paparazzi video so many nominations. Besides the fact that the single hasn’t even hit yet, it’s horrible and overlong and while yes, whoever did her hair might deserve an award, Jonas Akerlund is the worst thing ever.
@Maura: :D
@John Doe: Eminem’s “3 a.m.” is way better than the rehashed-joke clip that’s up. I also liked Kanye’s “Paranoid,” and Ne-Yo’s “Mad.”
And a few for the Breakthrough category:
Micachu’s “Golden Phone”
The Breeders’ “Fate To Fatal”
The awesome Dinosaur Jr.-goes-skateboarding clip
Notable omissions:
Black Eyed Peas
Mariah
And… Flo Rida? Ugh.
As far as blog-rock goes, I also think Fever Ray’s When I Grow Up should be there. And for boundary-pushing, what about the Solange pregnancy test video that basically doesn’t exist on the internet anymore?
@bcapirigi: OMG I totally forgot about the Fever Ray video. It’s so cool. Also, poor Solange, Beyoncé is just too much Knowles for the world.
@fre2daa oh, duh. thanks!
ps — in that case, I hope matt & kim win.
Excluding the moonman category, there are thirty-some acts sharing nominations across 14 categories. It’s disappointing that this small number are all that get recognized. They aren’t the best of the best. Beyonce and Lady Gaga share something like 18 nominations, alone.
Remember when music video television bombarded us with a nice smorgasbord of great viewing (back in the moonman nominees’ days)? I recently watched 30 minutes of “hot, new videos” on one of the MuchMTVH1 channels - only to be left underwhelmed and angry about it.
