I really like the idea of MTV Hits, but it seems as though 90% of the time it’s broadcasting Hitlist, the idea behind which is basically a given artist presenting his or her own songs mixed with a few other artists’. Most of these artists aren’t creative/interesting enough to come up with anything beyond their collaborators, scenemates, and direct, obvious influences, so you get a succession of pretty dull half hours.

Maura, you buy the “You’re a Jerk” ringtone to assign to a guy that you’ve broken ties with… as a reminder of how much you hate him when he rings up for a booty call or reconciliation. Such as.

Also, what’s up with the emergence of these non-video videos? Live performances are great, but isn’t part of their appeal that they’re creative film shorts? I can understand their prevalence on VH1 Classic (for songs pre-MTV-era) but why not run originals from the late 90s/early aughts?

IIRC, this was right after Snoop had escaped from Death Row (rimshot!) thus making him “eligible” to work with Dre again. Also, IIRC, he changed one of the lines in “G Thing” to “No Limit is the label that pays me…”

Eek. There are some memories here, but MTV is a like a terrible ex-boyfriend. Like, one that turned into such a full blown douche after we broke up that I am REALLY embarrassed to admit we ever knew each other, or how close we were, and I can’t see myself ever looking twice at it again.

The other day I was listening to the radio and a song came on I hadn’t heard in a while. I was bobbing my head long and enjoying it, when all of sudden I realized I was listening to Limp Bizkit. Is it possible that if we never knew anything about that knucklehead and the whole band died in a plane crash after the second album, that we might think back fondly on their music?

OK, maybe not.
