Forty years ago tomorrow, photographer Iain MacMillan took the photo that would be the cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road, spawning Paul McCartney death rumors in the immediate and a Webcam in the Internet-enabled years. It also inspired a bunch of “homages,” one of which sticks out above all the rest:

The tracklisting for Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers Play The Music Of The Beatles would seem to indicate that this album—which was released in 2001, wow—is not a compilation of mastermixes, but instead some disappointingly straight covers. This does not swing my mood, Jive Bunny!

2001? What the hell. (And I seriously thought you were going to do the Simpsons one.)
My favorite utterly geeked out homage is buried in the art for the Return of the King soundtrack, showing Peter Jackson, Howard Shore and two other folks in said pose.
Actually, not Simpsons so much as B-Sharps but anyway.
Happy birthday, Abbey Road pic! It’s a good excuse for the early release of this album, to give us a sneak peak per the upcoming Beatles catalogue explosion in September. If only.
I thought this would feature the one good thing the Red Hot Chili Peppers had done.
Overheard in the Mixmaster art department: “Anyone have a picture of that album cover? Oh, never mind. I basically remember how it goes.”
