“Do You Know What Ed Gein Said About Teenage Pop Stars?”

americancyruschoBrat Pack author Bret Easton Ellis’ most-listened-to track of the past five days: Miley Cyrus’ super-uplifting “The Climb,” according to Twitter. But what could it mean? One possible outcome, after the jump.

“Do you like Miley Cyrus? I’ve been a big Cyrus fan ever since the release of her 2008 album, Breakout. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of her work. Too young, too girly. It was on Breakout where Cyrus’ personality became more apparent. I think it’s her undisputed masterpiece. But then she’s still young. It’s an epic meditation on fame at an age when most of girls are just out of training bras. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of her preceding album and her television work. Vanessa, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Fields and Crozier. That glorious, sparkling over-compression. You can practically hear every nuance of every plug-in. Ashley, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Zac, why don’t you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to ‘The Other Side of Me.’ In this song, Cyrus addresses the struggles facing the pampered, pre-voting age daughter of a minor celebrity forced to constantly be ‘on.’ ‘Seven Things’ is the most moving pop song of the aughts, about the fickle and transient relationships shared by children who’ve known little real pain. The song is extremely uplifting. Her song doctor’s lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I’ve heard in teen-pop. Zac, get down on your knees so Vanessa can see your asshole. Miley’s earlier work seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like ‘Best Of Both Worlds.’ Vanessa, don’t just stare at Zac’s asshole, eat it. But I also think Miley Cyrus works best within the confines of the Disney machine, than as an artist, and I stress the word artist. This is ‘The Climb,’ a great, great song, a personal favorite.”

  1. jess, you’re something else.

  2. “price?”

    “yeah?”

    “you’re…priceless.”

  3. “Don’t just stare at it, eat it!” Will be from now on my personal mantra.

  4. HEY, PAUL!!!

  5. Oh Jess — FTW as ever.

I’m super-pleased that BEE is on Twitter; his updates are so charmingly perfunctory. Also, “The Climb” cannot be denied, clearly — even if the video is THE WORST THING EVER.
